Mitosis Internet Lesson

This document provides instructions for an internet lesson on mitosis. Students will review the steps of mitosis through online tutorials and videos. They will view animations of cell division and identify stages using onion root tip cells under a microscope. Students will calculate the percentage of cells in each stage and use this to estimate the time spent in each phase of the cell cycle. They will also answer questions about anticancer drugs that target spindle fibers and the effects of malfunctions during specific cell cycle phases.

Name:

Mitosis-InternetLesson (30 pts)

In this internet lesson, you will review the steps of mitosis and view video simulations of cell
division. You will also view an onion root tip and calculate the percentage of cells at each of the
stages of cell division.
Part 1:

Mitosis Tutorial at http://www.cellsalive.com/

Click on the link to “MITOSIS” Read the text on this page and view the animation, you can slow
down the video by clicking step by step through phases.

1. Which stage does the following occur?

Chromatin condenses into chromosomes

Chromosomes align at the center of cell

Longest part of the cell cycle

Nuclear envelope breakdown

Cell is cleaved into two new daughter cells

Daughter cells chromosomes arrive at the poles

Chromatids are pulled apart

2. Watch carefully the video. The colored chromosomes represent the chromatids. There are two
of each color because one is an exact duplicate of the other.
a. How many chromosomes are visible at the beginning of mitosis? ________________
b. How many are in each daughter cell at the end of mitosis? _______________________
c. The little green T-shaped things on the cell are: _______________________________
d. What happens to the centrioles during mitosis? _______________________________

3. Go to http://bio.rutgers.edu/~gb101/lab2_mitosis/index2.html
a. Click Begin Assessment
b. Click on Part 3: “Click to begin”
c. Click on the root tip link
d. Follow the directions to identify at least 1 cell in each stage of division.
e. On the space below, Draw a COLORED PICTURE of a root tip cell in each stage (I, P,
M, A, T, and C). You may use separate sheet for the drawings and capture your
drawing using camera phones and paste it in this activity sheet. (6 pts)
Part 2

1. Go to http://www.biology.arizona.edu/cell_bio/activities/cell_cycle/cell_cycle.html
2. Click Next twice until you see the chart.
3. Follow the directions to classify each cell as being in one of the phases.
In this activity, you will be presented with cells from the tip of an onion root. You will classify each cell
based on what phase it is in. At the end you will count the cells found in each phase and use those
numbers to predict how much time a dividing cell spends in each phase. You can base your
calculation on a total cell cycle of 24 hours. You can enter data in this table as you go along, or at the
end of the activity. (3 pts.)

Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase/ Total

Cytokinesis

Number of 36
cells

Percent of 100%
cells

4. Use your percentages to create a graph (on a separate sheet) of the amount of time a cell
spends in each stage of cell division, based on a 24-hour day (or 1,440 minutes). (3 pts.)

Percent of cells in stage X 1,440 minutes = ___________ minutes of cell cycle spent in
stage

Part 3:

Answer the following items. Using the concept of cell division, apply your knowledge from these
questions.

1. There are anticancer drugs that are used to prevent the formation of spindle fibers. Why do
you think this is effective in treating cancer? (3 pts.)
