The Walt Disney Company, known more as Disney, has been recognized as one of the “World’s
Most Admired Companies” on Fortune’s annual list in 2020. Disney has held the highest spot
within the entertainment industry for the 17th year consecutively. The company was found by Walt
E. Disney and Roy O. Disney. It has grown to be extremely successful, however Walt Disney’s
road to success was quite rough.
Disney was born with many siblings and an abusive father. His situation was stressful. One way
for him to escape was drawing. In 1920, he started his own cartoon business, Laugh-O-Gram
Studios, with his older brother, Roy O. Disney. Unfortunately, the company became bankrupt a few
years after. Disney fled to Los Angeles because he wanted to try acting. That did not work out well
for him. There were no animation studios in California, so Disney convinced his brother, Roy, to set
up a shop. Together, they set up the Disney Brothers Studio. Soon after, he finally became lucky
and found major success with the creation of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Though, he knew his luck
would fade away.
He went to New York to renegotiate his contract, just to find out that his producers had taken
his animator team from under him which he now not had any legal rights to Oswald the Lucky
Rabbit. To recover from this, on the train ride back to California, he created one of the most iconic
characters until today, Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse was brought to life on film, debuting with
“Steamboat Willie.’ Despite the success of Mickey Mouse, Disney was still facing many problems,
leading him to a nervous breakdown. After taking a break with his wife to recover from exertion, he
came up with a daring idea: to develop a full-length animation feature. One that he called, Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs. This movie became a major success.
During the start of World War II, Disney faced a problem with his animators. He had to rebuild
his company after the war ended. The process was slow, however throughout the process, Disney
diversified his business by turning to television. With the success of his tv shows, including The
Mickey Mouse Club and Davy Crockett, Disney was able to launch his biggest risk yet: Disneyland,
one of the most famous theme park until this day. Disney faced many problems during the
opening, but it became a colossal success. Now, Disneyland exists all around the world, and it
remains iconic.
Disney believed there are benefits to failure. He once said, “All the adversity I’ve had in my life,
all the troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me. You may not realize it when it happens, but
a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.” Failure may be seen as a sign to
give up, but more importantly, it could be seen as a kick in my life that could knock me over, but
makes me realize I have to get up. There is a reason to my failure, and I should use it as a way to
motivate myself. Failure is always on the way to success. That is what Walt Disney’s taught me. I
should never give up no matter how hard I get kicked down. All it takes is determination and
willingness, to lift myself up.
