Activity 2:

You’re Hot and I’m Cold

Materials:
3 spoons
1 piece of chocolate
1 piece of crayon
1 candle
match / lighter

What to do:

1. Describe the physical state of the materials (candle, crayon

and chocolate bar).
2. Put pieces of crayon in the spoon.
3. Put pieces of chocolate in another spoon
4. Put 1 slice of candle in another spoon.
5. Use matchstick, light the candle and let it stand on a small
piece of wood.
6. Using a pot holder hold the spoon (with chocolate bar, candle
and crayon) over the frame.
7. Heat the spoon for 2-3 minutes. Observe what happens. (take
note of your observation when the material is heated)
8. After 2-3 minutes, remove the spoonfrom the frame.
9. Wait for a few minutes until the material cools off. Observe
what happens. (take note your observation)

Guide Questions:
1. What happens to the butter, crayon and chocolate bar when
heated? It melt
2. Is there a change in the appearance of the material? What
change took place? Yes, it change from solid to liquid
3. How will you describe the change that happened to the material
when heated? melting

4. What happens to the material when cooled? Why? It freeze

5. Is there a change in the appearance of the material? No
6. How would you describe the change/s that happened to the
material when cooled? Freezing
7. Describe the change in the properties of the material when they
are heated and cooled. A physical change involves, A solid will
change to liquid when it is heated called melting and when it cooled
it change its phase and the process is called freezing.
