4.0 Formal dress


Formal__________ and formal ___________ are general terms for clothing suitable
for formal functions
A dress code is a set of rules governing a certain combination of clothing.

4.1 Casual vs Formal Wear


Casual and formal wear is two of the main dress codes that contain totally different styles.
Casual wear is the clothing that is used for everyday wear. The key difference between casual
and formal wear is that casual wear emphasize on _________ and ________ whereas
formal wear emphasize ___________ and __________.

4.2 General dressing and grooming guidelines


1. Dress to suit the function, office environment, position, or type of business. Fashion, advertising
and the arts generally allow more creativity while law and accounting lean towards
conformity.
2. Ensure that your clothes are comfortable to wear and made of good quality fabric.
3. Never wear clothes that are too tight.
4. Avoid trendy styles unless you work in a show business or in the advertising industry.
5. Your hairstyle should complement the shape and features of your face.
6. Avoid sneakers, sports shoes and jeans.
7. Avoid using a strong perfume.
8. Shoes should be clean, polished and free of scuff marks.
9. Fingernails should be trimmed and clean.
10. Use simple make-up that suits to the office environment

4.3 General dressing and grooming guidelines for women


1. Project your professional image. According to some image experts, “The more you show, the
less authority you have.”
2. Wear a well-cut dress in a good fabric (fine cotton, silk or linen), worn with a blazer or well-
fitting classic coordinates. Ensure your dress is slightly loose, not figure hugging.
3. A two-piece outfit, i.e skirt and an attractive blouse is also appropriate for business.
4. Skirt length should be just above the knee, at the knee or longer for a traditional look. Avoid
long slits up the skirt, see-through blouses and plunging necklines.
5. Make-up should be barely perceptible – natural and light. Your make-up should complement
your own natural skin tone, eyes and hair colour.
6. Jewellery should be simple and elegant. Avoid wearing more than one earring per ear. Avoid
also dangling earrings. Ensure that the shape and size of the earrings complement your face.
Limit rings to one per hand.
7. Shoes and handbags should coordinate i.e a black bag with black shoes.
8. Avoid extremely high-heeled shoes or shoes with colourful details. Avoid also coloured nail
varnish unless you are applying for a job in the fashion or beauty industry. Ensure you can walk
comfortably in your shoes.
9. Handbags should preferably be sleek.
10. Avoid carrying a purse with a handbag or briefcase.

4.4 General dressing and grooming guidelines for men

1. Wear a long-sleeved shirt with narrow pointed or button-down collars. Shirts should generally
be white, light blue or pin-striped. Avoid bright and blended colours or patterned designs. Ensure
that the shirt collar and cuffs are free of stains. The sleeves should extend to the wrist.

2. Wear a matching suit in navy blue, grey or black (solid or pinstripe). If you are wearing a
double-breasted suit, fasten every button (including the inside button). In the case of a single-
breasted suit, the top two buttons or the middle of the three should be fastened.

3. The trousers should have a good straight crease front and back and break once only before
hitting the shoe at the front of the foot. It should cover three-quarters of the shoes at the back.
Avoid trousers that are tight with stretched seams and pulled zippers.

4. Trousers should be worn with a plain leather belt. The colour of your leather belt should match
the colour of your shoes. Avoid large belt buckles.

5. Ensure that the tie is properly knotted with its tip ending at the middle of the belt or at least
touching the top of your belt buckle and that it matches the shirt. Never wear a loosened or
stained tie. Avoid ties with large polka dots, pictures of animals or sporting symbols such as golf
clubs.

6. Match the colour of the shoes with that of the trousers. The usual business shoe colours are black,
or brown.

7. Socks should preferably be of one solid colour. The colour of your socks should match the colour
of your trousers. The preferred colours are blue, black or brown.

8. Use a good quality pen which contributes to a polished image.

6.1 Basic Rules

▪ Eat at a leisurely pace.
