Module 4. Lesson 2 Design Response Spectrum

The document discusses design response spectra, which are elastic response spectra used to represent the dynamic effects of design basis ground motions for structural design. A design response spectrum provides the maximum response of single degree of freedom systems to a ground motion for a given damping level. It summarizes the frequency content of an acceleration time history and allows applying structural dynamics principles in building codes. The document outlines the process for constructing a linear design response spectrum based on site-specific seismic hazard parameters.

What is Design Response Spectrum?

NSCP 2015 & UBC 1997
‐ An elastic response spectrum for 5% equivalent viscous damping used to
represent the dynamic effects of the Design Basis Ground Motion for the
design of structures.
Layman Definition
‐ The peak or maximum response (acceleration, velocity, displacement) of all
possible linear single degree of freedom (SDF) system to a particular
component of ground motion for a given level of damping.

What is use of Design Response Spectrum?

‐ The response spectrum provides a convenient and practical way to summarize
the frequency content of a given acceleration, velocity or displacement time
history.
‐ It provides a practical way to apply the knowledge of structural dynamics to
the design of structures and development of lateral force requirements in
building codes.
‐ Note that, The response spectrum may be either site specific spectrum based
on geologic, tectonic, seismological and soil characteristics associated with a
specific site or may be a spectrum “constructed” in accordance with spectral
shape using the site specific coefficients and multiplied by acceleration due to
gravity.
