This document describes an experiment to analyze the stability and design specifications of an open or closed loop discrete time control system using a lead compensator. The equipment used includes MATLAB software and a personal computer. The transfer function of a lead compensator is presented. The design procedure to design a lead compensator with a zero on the right half of the pole is described. Two assessments are given to implement a discrete time closed loop system using Simulink and verify that the design specifications are satisfied by the designed lead compensator.

Experiment # 11: Trace the response of lead compensator for discrete time system.
Apparatus:
 MATLAB software
 Personal computer
Lead Compensator:
Lead compensator is commonly used to improve the transient response of the given system. The transfer function of
the lead compensator can be written as;
z+ a
G D ( z )= K
z+ b
C ( z ) will be a lead compensator if its zero lies on right half of the pole. The design procedure to design the lead
compensator is presented below;

Lab Assessments
Assessment 1:
Implement the above presented discrete time close loop system using Simulink and verify that the design
specifications are satisfied by the above designed lead compensator.
Assessment 2:
Assuming that the model of the plant is represented by the following transfer function;
1
G p ( s )=
s ( s+ 2 )
By following the design procedure presented above, design the lead compensator to achieve the following close loop
design specifications.
1. Settling time: T s ≤2 sec
2. Percentage Overshoot: P .O . ≤10 %
Show your design calculations. Implement the discrete time close loop system using Simulink and verify that above
design specifications are achieved.
