XII ASSINGMENT
Magnetic effect of current.
1. Discuss analogies and differences between coulumb’s law and
Biot-savart’s law.
2. Why do we not simply define the direction of the magnetic
induction induction B in which the magnetic force acts on a
moving charge?
3. What is ∫B ⋅ds for the path shown in the following fig.
1A 3A
4A
5A
2A
I a
I b
8. Can the path of integration around which we apply Amp’s law pass
through a conductor?
9. Two long straight parallel wires 12.2cm apart,
each carry a current of 115A. The figure shows
a cross section with the wires running perpendicular to the page
and point P lying on the perpendicular bisector of a. Find the
magnitude and direction of the magnetic field at P when the current in
the left hand wire is out of the page and the current in the right hand
wire is a) Out of the page b) Into the page.
12. a) Why does a charged particle moving at right angle to the direction
of a magnetic field follow a circular path?
18. A length L of a wire carries current ‘i’. Show that if the wire is
formed into a circular coil, the maximum torque has the value
[ T= L2iB/4π].
19. What is the value of shunt resistance in order to pass 10% of the main
current in the galvanometer of resistance 99Ω. [11Ω in series].
21. Two similar coils of radius R and number of turns N are lying
concentrically with their planes at right angle to each other. The current
flowing in them are I & 2I respectively. What is the resultant magnetic
field at the centre would be?
22. Two identical coils each of radius ‘r’ and having n number of turns
are lying in perpendicular planes, such that they have common centre.
Find the magnetic field at the centre of the coils, if they carry currents
equal to I & √3 I respectively. [µonI/r]
23. A long wire is first bent into a circular coil of 1 turn & then into a
circular coil of smaller radius having n turns. If the same currents passes
in both the cases, find the ratio of the magnetic field produced at the
centre in the two cases. [B’=n2B]
24.An electric current is flowing in a circular wire of radius a. At what
distance from the centre on the axis of the circular wire will the magnetic
field be 1/8th of its value at the centre? [x=√3a]
26. (a) A current is set up along a copper pipe. Is there any magnetic
field(1) in side and (2) out side the pipe?
(b) Can a magnetic field independent of time, change the velocity of a
charged particle?
(c) Prove that the percentage error in measuring the voltage across a
resistor r by a voltmeter of resistance R (current remaining unchanged) is
given by [ 1- R/(R+r)]
27. a) Give four different ways to produce a magnetic fields.
b) The net charge in a current carrying conductor is zero; even then it
experiences a force in magnetic fields, why?
c) An electron beam is moving south to north just above a magnetic
needle. What shall be the effect on the needle?
d) A charged particle does not do any work while moving in a
perpendicular magnetic fields- justify.
e) What is the value of a magnetic field on a thin current carrying
conductor?
30. Equal current I=1A are flowing through the long wire parallel to y-
axis located at x=+1m, x=+2m, x=+4m…and so on. What is magnetic
field at the origin O. [1.33x10-7Rˆ]
31. An electron at a point Ain the figure has a velocity v0 = 107m/s. Find
(a) the magnitude and direction of the magnetic induction that will cause
the electron to follow a semicircular path from A to B which are 10 cm
apart.(b) the time required for the electron to move from A to B.
B = 1.125 x 10-3 T. T = 3.14 x 10-8 s.
