3 Description of work
The following chapters describe the work steps necessary for
performing the services displayed in the maintenance tables.
Please refer to the relevant maintenance table for information on
when a service is due.
3.1 Reading out: measured value block 32
Note
Only applies in certain countries. For the countries affected, refer

to maintenance table.
– Carry out the following steps one after the other.

♦ Connect VAS 5051 or 5052.
♦ Self-diagnosis
♦ Engine electronics
♦ Measured value blocks
♦ Select measured value block 32
♦ Display zone 2 (4-cylinder engines)
♦ Display zones 2 and 4 (V6 and V8 engines)
Note
Add four times as much G17 additive ⇒ page 20 if there is a

deviation of > 15 % in the values.
WARNING
If the values deviate by more than 15 % repeatedly, a repair

measure must be performed.
3.2 Battery status: reading out in Guided

3.3 Battery: checking fluid level
3.3.1 Batteries with „magic eye“

The battery is located in the luggage compartment.
– Switch off the ignition and remove the ignition key from the
lock.
– Unscrew nut -1- and take cover -2-permitted
off toolunless
kit. authorised by AUDI AG. AUDI AG does not guarantee or accept any liability
– Take off moulded insert above battery.
♦ The magic eye -arrow- indicates the electrolyte level and the
charge level of the battery to be checked.
♦ Lightly tap battery housing with a suitable tool to eliminate air
bubbles underneath „magic eye“ which could falsify colour
display.
♦ Three different colours are used as indicators:
– Green → the battery is sufficiently charged.
– Black → no charge or charge too low.
– Colourless or yellow → critical electrolyte level has been
reached. Battery must be renewed.

3.3.2 Battery with sealing plugs

♦ A visual check of the battery is sufficient for batteries with
clearly visible external min. and max. marks.
♦ The electrolyte level must be above the minimum marking, but
must not exceed the maximum marking.
♦ If the external min. and max. marks on the battery are not
clearly visible or if the electrolyte level cannot be checked
properly due to an opaque battery housing, the sealing plugs
must be unscrewed. It is then possible to visually check the
electrolyte level from the inside.
♦ The electrolyte level must align with the marking inside the
battery (plastic moulding). This corresponds to the max. mark‐
ing on the outside.
Note
If electrolyte level is too low, the cell plates dry out, resulting in a
loss of battery capacity (loss of power). The cell plates Protected
must be by copyright. Copying for private or commercial purposes, in part or in whole, is not
fully covered by electrolyte (sulphuric acid) in order to prevent
corrosion of plates, plate bridges and cell connectors. Corrosion

of these parts will impair battery function and make it unreliable.

It will be rendered unusable.
WARNING
If the electrolyte level is below the min. marking the battery

must be renewed! ⇒ Rep. gr. 27
3.3.3 VRLA (valve-regulated lead acid) bat‐

teries or AGM (absorbent glass mat)

Visual check of battery: check that
1- Battery terminals are not corroded
2- Battery terminals and battery are securely fitted
3- Battery terminals and housing are not damaged
Caution
Increased safety risk in the event of an accident if the wrong

battery is installed.
If the vehicle was originally equipped with a VRLA or AGM
battery, it is important that a VRLA or AGM battery is installed
again if the battery is renewed.

3.4 Battery: checking that battery cables are

securely fitted
– Check that battery terminal clamps are securely fitted. If nec‐
essary, tighten nuts -1- and -2-.
WARNING
If the battery clamp on the positive terminal is not fitted se‐

curely, disconnect the battery earth strap from the battery
negative terminal first to avoid possible accidents.
– Take out mounting for tool kit and remove subwoofer, if fitted
⇒ Rep. gr. 91 .
– Check that battery is securely installed. If necessary tighten
securing bolt -6- on retainer plate -7-.

3.5 Tyres: checking condition, wear pattern,

tread depth and correcting tyre pres‐
sures
3.5.1 Checking tyres permitted unless authorised by AUDI AG. AUDI AG does not guarantee or accept any liability
Note
♦ In the interest of driving safety, only tyres of the same type and
tread pattern should be fitted on a vehicle.
♦ On four-wheel drive vehicles tyres of the same type and tread
pattern must be used. Otherwise the self-locking centre dif‐
ferential may be damaged.
3.5.2 Delivery Inspection

– Check tyre tread surfaces and sidewalls for damage and re‐
move any foreign bodies.
3.5.3 Inspection Service

– Check tyre tread surfaces and sidewalls for damage and re‐
move any foreign bodies.
– Check tyres for scuffing, one-sided wear, porous sidewalls,
cuts and fractures.

WARNING
Any defects must be reported to the customer.
3.5.4 Checking tyre wear pattern

– The wear pattern of the front tyres indicates, for example,
whether the toe and camber have to be checked.
♦ Feathering on tread indicates incorrect toe setting.
♦ One-sided tread wear is usually due to incorrect camber.
Note

3.5.6 Inflating to correct pressures

The correct tyre pressures are listed on the sticker on the inside
of the driver's door.

cold tyres. When the tyres are warm, the actual pressures will be
higher, but must not be reduced.
3.5.7 Tyre repair kit: checking expiry date

♦ In the case of vehicles with a tyre repair kit, the expiry date
must be checked.
♦ The bottle of tyre filler is located in the spare wheel well under
the battery cover.

Take out the bottle and check the expiry date (printed on bottle

3.5.8 Spare wheel

The tyre valves have to be sealed with valve caps. Otherwise, dirt
could enter the valve, which will then become blocked and will no
longer seal properly.
3.6 Brake system: visual check for leaks

and damage
– Check the following components for leaks and damage:
♦ Brake master cylinder
♦ Brake servo
♦ ABS hydraulic unit
♦ Brake calipers
– Ensure that brake hoses are not twisted.
– Make sure that brake hoses do not touch any components
when steering is on full lock.
– Check brake hoses for porosity, blistering and brittleness.

– Check brake pipe connections and mountings for correct seat‐
ing, leaks and corrosion.

3.7 Brake pads: checking thickness

Before using the test gauge to check the pad thickness, push the
sliding ring towards the tip of the gauge as far as it will go. Then
insert the test gauge through the wheel rim and bring the tip of
the gauge into contact with the brakebydisc.

When the thickness of the brake pads (including backplate) is

down to a value of 7 for the front brake pads and 7 for the rear
brake pads on the scale of the test gauge, the brake pads have
reached their wear limit and must be renewed (repair meas‐
ure). The customer must be informed.

♦ On some vehicles (fitted with aftermarket rims) it may not be

possible to insert the test gauge through the wheel rim and
bring it into contact with the brake disc or the brake pad, due
to the shape of the rim. In this case proceed as follows:
♦ Determine thickness of outer pads by checking visually (using
electric torch through cut-out in rim).
♦ Determine thickness of inner pads by checking visually (with
help of electric torch and mirror).
3.8 Brake fluid level (depends on brake pad

wear): checking

Only use new genuine VW/Audi brake fluid, refer to ETKA.

must therefore not be allowed to come into contact with
paintwork.
♦ Brake fluid is hygroscopic, i.e. it absorbs moisture from the

3.8.1 Delivery Inspection

♦ The fluid level must be at the MAX mark.

The fluid level must not exceed the MAX marking, otherwise the
fluid will overflow.
3.8.2 Inspection Service

When the vehicle is driven, the brake fluid level will drop slightly
with use and as a result of the automatic adjustment of the brake
pads.
– When checking the brake fluid level, always take into account
the amount of wear on the brake pads:
♦ If the brake pads are new or a long way from reaching the
brake pad wear limit, the fluid level should be between the MIN
and MAX marks.
♦ If the brake fluid level is at or slightly above the MIN marking
and the brake pads have almost reached the wear limit, top‐
ping up is not required.
WARNING
If the fluid level has dropped below the MIN mark, check the
brake system (repair measure) before adding brake fluid.
3.9 Brake fluid: changing

3.12 Electric windows: checking positions

The electric window regulators „forget“ their current positions and
the automatic open/close function when the battery is disconnec‐
ted.
– Activate the automatic open/close function as follows:
– Switch on ignition.
– Close the windows all the way to their top positions using the
window switches.
– Then operate all window switches again for at least one sec‐
ond in the „close“ direction to activate the automatic one-touch
function.
– Press switch to open window. The side window should move
all the way down automatically.
3.13 Ignition keys: checking operation

– Open key ring to check each key individually.
– Insert one ignition key after the other into ignition lock and start
engine with each key.
– If the engine switches off automatically after approx. 3 sec‐
onds and the odometer display shows „safe“ the ignition key
has not been matched to the immobiliser.
– Repair measure: Guided Fault Finding (matching ignition
keys).
– Make a note in the delivery record of the number of ignition
keys which have been checked and handed over.
– With the engine running, try to pull the ignition key out of the
ignition lock.
– If the ignition key can be pulled out of the ignition lock while
the engine is still running, this means the ignition lock mech‐
anism was already engaged before the key was inserted.

3.14 G17 additive: adding
Note
Only applies in certain countries. For the countries affected, refer

to maintenance table.
♦ When adding G17 fuel additive into the tank, the ratio must be
10 ml of additive per 10 litres of fuel.
♦ The following table lists the quantities to be added depending
on the fuel level indicated on the fuel gauge.

♦ The temperature of fuel pipes and the fuel itself can be up
to 100 °C. Let fuel cool off before opening any pipe con‐
nections; otherwise there is a danger of scalding!

cloth around the connection and loosen the connection

– Open hose clip -3- with hose clip pliers -V.A.G 1921- and dis‐
connect intake hose.

– Remove securing bolts -arrows-.
– Lift out air cleaner housing (top section).
– Remove old filter element by unscrewing both bolts -arrows-.

– Clean air cleaner housing, install new filter element and tighten
bolts -arrows-.

When installing filter element, make sure that guide -1- sits in
tab -2-.
– Install air cleaner housing (top section) with filter and tighten
bolts -arrows-.
– Fit connector -2- onto air mass meter and make sure it en‐
gages.

Installing air filter element

To ensure the correct function of the air mass meter -G70- it is
important to observe the following notes and adhere to the pro‐
cedures described below.
– Clean water drain -arrow- in air cleaner (bottom section).

– Clean the air cleaner housing (top and bottom sections) to re‐
move any salt residue, dirt and leaves (if necessary vacuum-
clean).
– Check air mass meter and air hose (engine intake side) for salt
residue, dirt and leaves.
– Check air duct leading from lock carrier to air cleaner housing
for dirt and leaves.
– If fitted, reconnect vacuum hose at variable intake manifold
change-over valve -N335- .
– When installing the air filter element make sure it is positioned
centrally on the mounting in the air cleaner (bottom section).
– Carefully fit the top section of the air cleaner on the bottom
section of the air cleaner, without applying any force. When
fitting the top section of the air cleaner, make sure it is NOT
positioned on the air filter element at an angle (observe sealing
lip of air filter element).
– Make sure that the air hose is correctly seated at the air mass
meter -G70- .
Install further in reverse sequence.

3.21.3 General notes
Note
♦ If the air filter element is very dirty or soaked with water, dirt
particles or moisture can reach the air mass meter -G70- and
falsify the detected air mass values. This will cause a loss of
power, as the calculated injection quantities will be too low.
♦ Always use genuine air filter elements (same as original equip‐
ment).
♦ Use a lubricant (silicon-free) when installing intake hose.
♦ Secure all hose connections with genuine hose clips (same as
original equipment): refer to ETKA.
♦ Check whether the water drain hose in the bottom section of
the air cleaner is dirty or blocked (clean if necessary).

– Re-install air cleaner (bottom section).

The water drain hose must be routed straight downwards; make

sure it is not kinked or twisted.
– Press vacuum hose -1- back onto connection at variable in‐

take manifold change-over valve -N335- .

– Carefully fit the top section of the air cleaner on the bottom
section of the air cleaner, without applying any force.

Before securing, check again that top section of air cleaner is

– Then secure top section of air cleaner to bottom section.

– Make sure that air hose is secured correctly.
– The remaining installation steps are carried out in the reverse

WARNING
Use only engine oil with the specification VW 507 00 on vehi‐

cles equipped with diesel particulate filter.
Engines with turbocharger:

– When the engine oil and oil filter have been changed, it is im‐
portant to note the following after starting the engine for the
first time:
♦ The engine must only run at idling speed as long as the oil
pressure warning lamp in the dash panel is on. Do not rev up!
If the engine is revved up the turbocharger can be damaged
or fail completely.
♦ The full oil pressure is not attained until the warning lamp has
gone out, only then can the engine be revved up.
All engines:
– Finally, check oil level.
3.27.1 Checking oil level via oil level display

3.30.2 Fitting wheels correctly

– When fitting the wheels please observe the following rules to
ensure that the wheels will remain securely fitted:

• When fitting a wheel do not tighten the first wheel bolts imme‐
diately (e.g. with an impact wrench), as this would prevent the

screwed in. The rim could then come loose even though the
bolts have been tightened to the specified torque.
• Before fitting the wheels examine the seats of the wheel bolts
and the contact surfaces between the rims and the hubs for
rust and corrosion and clean it off these parts if necessary.
Otherwise, after fitting the wheels, the clamping force of the
wheel bolts may be impaired and the rims could come loose.

WARNING
♦ If the points listed above are not observed the wheels can
come loose and the wheel bolt seats can become distor‐
ted.
♦ This distortion may be so slight that it is not visible.
♦ Even this slight distortion of the wheel bolt seats can pre‐
vent the rims from being held firmly and will make them
come loose repeatedly.
3.31 Reducing agent (AdBlue®): Filling tank
WARNING
♦ The reducing agent can cause irritation of the skin, eyes

and respiratory organs.
♦ If you come into contact with the liquid, rinse it off imme‐
diately with plenty of water.
♦ Consult a doctor.
Caution
Always make sure that reducing agent does not come into
contact with parts of the bodywork or trim panels.
Clean the affected areas with clean water and a lint-free cotton
cloth.
If the reducing agent has already crystallised, use warm water
and a sponge.
Any remnants of the reducing agent that have not been re‐
moved crystallise after a certain period and can damage the
affected surface.

♦ The following description applies for vehicles with diesel en‐

gine and SCR (selective catalytic reduction).
♦ The reducing agent is not a diesel additive and must not be
filled into the diesel fuel tank.
♦ The reducing agent is used for the after-treatment of exhaust
gases, i.e. to reduce the level of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust
gas of diesel-engined vehicles.
♦ The reducing agent reduces these nitrogen oxides to water
and nitrogen.
♦ The reducing agent is a high-purity, 32.5 % urea solution which
is used in systems with after-treatment of exhaust gases (SCR
catalytic converters) for diesel engines.
♦ The reducing agent is statutory for vehicles with SCR.
♦ AdBlue® is a registered trademark of the German Association
of the Automotive Industry (VDA).
♦ Do not add any additives to the reducing agent, and do not
dilute it with water.
♦ Do not fill in any fluid that has already been used.

Make sure that all lines of the filling device -VAS 6542- are not
twisted or blocked at any time. To make it easier to handle the
breather line, it can be turned through 360 °C.
Perform the following steps in the specified sequence:

♦ 1. Open tank cap.
♦ 2. Clean filler neck of tank for reducing agent with a lint-free
cotton cloth soaked with water.
♦ 3. Close cut-off valves of breather and filler lines of filling de‐
vice -VAS 6542- .

(⇒ Electronic parts catalogue ) and screw it on as far as stop.
♦ 5. Position reducing agent container on engine and gearbox
jack -VAG 1383 A- with adapter plate -VAG 1383 A1- . The
difference in height of the reducing agent container and the
filler neck of the tank for reducing agent must be between
60 - 80 cm -dimension A-.
♦ 6. Position filling device -VAS 6542- on filler neck and screw
it on as far as stop.
♦ 7. Open cut-off valve onpermitted
breather line.

♦ 8. Open cut-off valve on filler line. The tank for reducing agent
has been filled completely (maximum filling) when:
♦ The container contracts noticeably.
♦ The filler line fills with liquid.

If the container is emptied completely while you are still filling the
tank, repeat steps 3 to 8.
♦ 9. Close cut-off valve on filler line at tank.

♦ 10. Now close cut-off valve on breather line at container.
♦ 11. Disconnect quick-release coupling on breather line and let
any excess liquid flow into a suitable container.
Note
♦ The procedure has been completed when the correct filling

level in the tank for reducing agent has been reached auto‐
matically (no more reducing agent comes out of breather line).
♦ After filling the tank, the system must be adapted so that the
reducing agent in the tank is detected by the system
⇒ page 47 .
♦ 12. When no more liquid comes out of breather line, remove

filling device -VAS 6542- from filler neck.
♦ 13. Clean filler neck and cap with a lint-free cotton cloth soaked
with water.
♦ 14. Close tank cap.
♦ 15. Take container off adapter plate and put it in the floor.
♦ 16. Open cut-off valve on filler line and let remaining liquid flow
back into container.
♦ 17. Remove filling device -VAS 6542- from container.
♦ 18. After filling the tank, the learnt values for the tank for re‐
ducing agent must be adapted so that the new fluid level can
be detected ⇒ page 47 .

3.34.1 Park position for windscreen wiper

♦ Every 2nd time the windscreen wiper motor is switched off, it

will return the wiper arms slightly past the end position, which
ensures that the lip of the wiper blade is tipped the other way.
♦ To do so, the wiper motor will first move the wiper arms down
and then up again just a little to their final position. You must
not adjust or check the wiper crank while the wiper arms are
in this raised position.
♦ Instead, carry out adjustment or checks only after the wiper
motor has moved the wiper arms directly to their normal final
position (not raised); if necessary let wipers carry out a brief
wipe.
– Switch windscreen wipers on and off and let them return to

their park position.
– Switch off ignition.

– Install dust and pollen filter -A- correctly (diagonally cut side
-C- towards fresh air blower -D-).
Note
There is no predetermined flow direction in the dust and pollen

filter -A- intended for this vehicle (the same filter is installed in LHD
and RHD vehicles).
3.40 Notes on dust and pollen filter with ac‐

tive charcoal filter insert
♦ The dust and pollen filter is available in different versions (with
and without active charcoal filter insert) ⇒ Parts catalogue .
Vehicles with a „deluxe“ air conditioner are currently fitted with
a dust and pollen filter with active charcoal filter insert; vehicles
with a „basic“ air conditioner are fitted with a dust and pollen
filter without active charcoal filter insert.
♦ The dust and pollen filter with an additional active charcoal
filter insert is fitted in vehicles with a „deluxe“ air conditioner;
these vehicles are additionally fitted with an air quality sensor
-G238- .
♦ The filter with active charcoal filter insert works like a conven‐
tional dust and pollen filter, but it also filters out gaseous
pollutants such as ozone, benzene and nitrogen dioxide from
the air passing through. The main function of the active char‐
coal layer in the dust and pollen filter is to keep peak concen‐
trations away from the passenger compartment.
♦ However, the active charcoal also absorbs certain gaseous
impurities in the air passing through. The active charcoal layer
in the dust and pollen filter has a different effect on the various
pollutants in the air:
- Certain pollutants are firmly bound in the active charcoal layer.
- Other pollutants are converted into harmless compounds, as in
a catalytic converter.
- For the rest of the pollutants the active charcoal functions like a
capacitor. When the pollution increases, the active charcoal ini‐
tially absorbs pollutants until a certain level of saturation has been

reached. If the pollution is reduced, the active charcoal layer then

continuously gives off these absorbed particles.
♦ As the active charcoal layer permanently binds some of the
gaseous particles in the air in addition to dust and pollen, we
recommend renewing the dust and pollen filter earlier than
specified under the following operating conditions:
– When the vehicle is driven in areas with a continuously high
level of atmospheric pollution; in these conditions the active
charcoal layer becomes saturated more quickly.
– When the „Automatic air recirculation“ function is mostly
turned off while the vehicle is being driven.
♦ In vehicles fitted with an air quality sensor -G238- , the air
conditioner should preferably always be operated with the
„Automatic air recirculation“ function activated. However, if it
is necessary or desired to deactivate the function, note the
following:
- The active charcoal layer in the dust and pollen filter becomes
saturated after a certain time.
- A saturated filter can no longer absorb pollutants; they will then
pass through unfiltered.
♦ The main function of the active charcoal layer in the dust and
pollen filter and the air quality sensor -G238- is to keep peak
concentrations away from the passenger compartment. How‐
ever, please note the following:
– If the vehicle is driven in an area with relatively clean ambient
air, i.e. with a low level of gaseous pollutants in the air, the air
conditioner will automatically switch from the fresh air ventila‐
tion mode to the air recirculation mode at a different time than
in an area with a generally high level of pollution, e.g. in an
industrial area.
– The air conditioner automatically switches from the fresh air
ventilation mode to the air recirculation mode, Protected
independently
of the basic pollution level, when the level of pollution increa‐
ses, e.g. when driving through a cloud of exhaust fumes from

a lorry run with diesel.
3.41 Track rods, track control links, swivel

joints, guide links and drive shafts on
front and rear axle: checking boots, play,
and secure fit

♦ There must be no noticeable play.
♦ Check all around the boots -2- to make sure they are not dam‐
aged and are seated correctly. If necessary use a mirror.
♦ As a rule you can identify damage to the boots by emerging

– Check all around the boots -arrows- to make sure they are not

Track control link
– With no weight on the wheels, check for play between wheel

bearing housing and track control link.
– The relative movement between wheel bearing housing and
track control link can be assessed by lifting and lowering the
wheel several times with your hands -arrow-.
– If you identify noticeable play while lifting and lowering the
wheel, the track control link must be renewed.

Drive shaft boots:
– Check the inner and outer drive shaft boots all around for
damage and make sure they are correctly seated. If necessary
turn the wheel.
♦ You can identify any ruptures in the boots at an early stage by
turning the steering.
♦ As a rule you can easily identify damage to the drive shaft boot
by a lot of grease emerging from the boot.

3.42 Transport mode: deactivating (using ve‐

hicle diagnostic, testing and information
system -VAS 5051/5052- )
The transport mode serves to maintain the vehicle's ability to start
(battery power level). The transport mode limits the extent to
which the battery discharges. When the vehicle is in transport
mode, many functions are restricted or no longer available at all,
e.g. CD changer and radio are deactivated.

3.43 Transport locks: removing locking ele‐

ments for front and rear suspension
struts
Some models are supplied with transport locks fitted on the front
and rear suspension struts. These vehicles are identified by a tag

– Relieve the load on the coil springs (e.g. by raising vehicle on
a lifting platform).

3.45 Plenum chamber: checking water drain

♦ Remove additional covers -1- and -4-.
♦ Do not remove plenum chamber cover -3-.
♦ First unclip covers at front bottom, then release tabs -2- at rear
by slightly pressing them together from below, and then lift
covers out of plenum chamber cover.
• Check for dirt in plenum chamber.
WARNING
Note
If there is dirt, first use a flexible picking tool or similar to clean

any coarse dirt from the drains (rubber grommets left and right)
and the area beneath the brake servo. Fine dirt can be removed
with a thin hose or a suction-feed spray gun V.A.G 1538 and a
flexible nylon probe V.A.G 1538/2 or similar.
3.46 Winter tyres (factory-fitted)
Note
♦ On vehicles supplied from the factory with winter tyres, check

the tyre pressures as part of the Delivery Inspection.
♦ The warning sticker indicating the maximum permissible
speed for the tyres must be affixed in a position where it is
immediately visible to the driver.

♦ Puller for pencil-type ignition coils -T40039-

TFSI
Removing:
– Remove engine cover panel ⇒ page 32 .
– Loosen two bolts securing connector rail.
– Using puller -T40039- , pull all ignition coils approx. 30 mm out
of spark plug apertures.
– Release electrical connectors and pull all connectors simulta‐
neously off ignition coils.
– Remove spark plugs using spark plug socket and extension
-3122B- .
– Install new spark plugs.
Installing:
– Fit all ignition coils loosely into spark plug apertures.
– Align ignition coils with electrical connectors and plug all con‐
nectors simultaneously onto coils.
– Push ignition coils evenly onto spark plugs by hand (do NOT
attempt to knock in coils with any kind of tool).

– Remove air cleaner (bottom section).
– Unscrew bolts for wiring harness of ignition coils.
– Release electrical connectors and at the same time pull con‐
nectors evenly off ignition coils.
Removing spark plugs, cylinder bank 2:
– Unbolt coolant expansion tank -arrows-.

– Unplug electrical connector for coolant shortage indicator
switch -F66- at bottom of coolant expansion tank and move
coolant expansion tank with coolant hoses -1-, -2- and -3- clear
to one side.
– Unscrew bolts -arrows-.

– Use puller -T40039- to pull ignition coil approx. 30 mm out of
spark plug aperture.

Schedule, and also on the vehicle in the spare wheel well or on

4 - Engine output/ emissions standard/ gearbox
5 - Engine and gearbox code letters (not specified on some export
models)
6 - Paint number/ interior equipment identification number
7 - Identification numbers for optional extras
8 - Unladen weight/ fuel consumption/ CO2 emission level (not
specified on some export versions)

5 Lifting the vehicle
WARNING
♦ To avoid damaging the vehicle underbody and to prevent

the vehicle from tipping, the vehicle should only be lifted
at the points shown in the illustration.
♦ Never start engine and engage gear with vehicle lifted, so
long as even one driven wheel has contact with the floor.
There is a risk of accident if this is not observed.
♦ If work is to be performed under the vehicle, it must be
securely supported by suitable stands.
Trolley jack
Always use suitable rubber or wooden blocks to avoid damage.
A trolley jack may only be applied at the lifting points as illustrated.
On no account should vehicle be lifted at engine sump, gearbox
or on front or rear axle, as this may cause serious damage.
Lifting platform
Before driving on to a lifting platform ensure there is sufficient
clearance between low-mounted vehicle components and the lift‐
ing platform.
Lifting points for lifting platform and trolley jack
Front:
On vertical reinforcement of side member level with the marking
for the vehicle jack.
Rear:
On vertical reinforcement of side member level with the marking
for the vehicle jack.

6 Tow-starting/towing
– Attach tow rope or tow bar only to the following towing eyes:
Front towing eye
– Remove cover from right bumper (right side).
– Take towing eye out of vehicle tool kit.
– Screw in towing eye as far as it will go and tighten it with wheel
bolt spanner.
Rear towing eye

– Screw in towing eye as far as it will go and tighten it with wheel
bolt spanner.
After use remember to unscrew towing eye and replace it in ve‐
hicle tool kit. The towing eye must always be carried with the
vehicle.
Note
♦ The tow rope should be slightly elastic to reduce the risk of

damage to both vehicles. It is advisable to only use synthetic
fibre ropes or ropes of similar elastic material. However, it is
safer to use a tow bar.
♦ Always avoid excessive towing forces and do not jerk. During
towing operations on unsurfaced roads there is always a dan‐
ger that the attachment parts will be over-stressed and dam‐
aged.
♦ The vehicle should only be tow-started if it is not possible to
start the engine using jump leads.
If the vehicle has to be towed or tow-started, please note the fol‐

lowing points:
♦ Legal regulations concerning towing must be observed.
♦ Both drivers must be familiar with towing procedures. Inex‐
perienced drivers should not attempt to tow-start or tow.
♦ When using a tow rope, the driver of the towing vehicle must
engage the clutch very gently whenProtected
moving off and changing
gear.
♦ The driver of the vehicle being towed must ensure that the tow
rope is always taut.
♦ Both vehicles must switch on their hazard warning lights, un‐
less otherwise specified by local regulations.
♦ The ignition must be switched on so that the steering wheel is
free and the turn signals, horn and windscreen wiper and
washer system can be used.
♦ Because the brake servo only works when the engine is run‐
ning, considerably more pressure is required on the brake
pedal when the engine is not running.
♦ As power-assisted steering does not work when the engine is
not running, more force is required to turn the steering wheel
when the engine is off.
♦ If there is no lubricant in the manual or automatic gearbox, the
vehicle must be towed with the driven wheels raised off the
ground.
When tow-starting vehicles with manual gearbox, please note the
following points:
– Before moving off, engage 2nd or 3rd gear, press clutch pedal
and hold.
– Switch on ignition.
– When both vehicles are moving, release clutch pedal.
– As soon as the engine starts, depress clutch and move gear
lever to neutral to avoid running into the towing vehicle.

Note
♦ Vehicles with a catalytic converter (petrol engines only) must

not be tow-started over a distance of more than 50 m if the
catalytic converter has already reached operating tempera‐
ture. Otherwise, unburnt fuel may enter the catalytic converter
and cause damage.
♦ For technical reasons, it is not possible to tow-start a vehicle
with an automatic gearbox.
When towing a vehicle with front-wheel drive and automatic gear‐

box the following points must also be noted:
♦ Selector lever must be in position „N“.
♦ Do not tow vehicle at a speed of more than 50 km/h.
♦ The maximum towing distance is 50 kilometres.
If towing over greater distances, the vehicle must be lifted at the
front.
Reason: When the engine is not turning the gearbox oil pump will
not work - the gearbox will therefore not be adequately lubricated
for higher speeds or longer distances.
When using a breakdown vehicle, the vehicle can only be towed
with the front wheels raised.
Reason: If vehicle is towed when raised at rear, the drive shafts
will turn backwards. As a result, the planetary gears in the auto‐
matic gearbox will then turn at such high speeds that the gearbox
will be severely damaged in a short time.
When towing a vehicle with four-wheel drive and manual gearbox
the following points must also be noted:
When using a breakdown vehicle, the vehicle being towed can be

7 Vehicle tests carried out as part of in‐

spection services and maintenance
We recommend using the dialogue receipt and inspection unit
VAS 5000 and the performance test stand V.A.G 1858 for the
vehicle tests.
Brake test
For information on carrying out brake tests on front-wheel drive
and four-wheel drive vehicles refer to the appropriate "Brake sys‐
tem" workshop manual.
Performance test
Please carry out the performance tests on the performance test
stands recommended by Audi. These performance test stands
take into account the corrective figures for automatic gearbox and
four-wheel drive. Vehicles with four-wheel drive must only be tes‐
ted on a four-wheel performance test stand.
Speedometer test
During the speedometer test the vehicle is driven by its own
wheels. Vehicles with four-wheel drive must only be tested on a
four-wheel test stand.
