Assignment Test

A 3-part assignment test involving distillation calculations is described. Part 1 involves distilling a methanol-water mixture until 75% of the methanol leaves in the vapor. Part 2 involves recovering 90% of n-butane from a n-butane/n-pentane mixture by flash distillation. Part 3 involves subjecting a heptane/naphthalene mixture to flash distillation and determining the compositions of the distillate and residue based on enthalpy data.

Assignment Test

1. A feed mixture of 10 kmoles having 60 mol% methanol and the rest water is batch
distilled at 1 atm pressure. Find the moles of distillate produced and the concentration
of the bottom product if distillation is done until 75 % of the feed methanol leaves in
the vapor by assuming α = 2.5 for the system.

2. Ninety percentage of the n-butane is to be recovered by flash distillation from a

mixture containing 35 mol% n-butane and 65 mol% n-pentane. Determine the
composition of the residue and the amount of distillate and residue for 100 kmol of
feed using an average ∝ value of 3.5.

3. The enthalpy concentration data for a binary system are as follows

x 0 0.25 0.41 0.6 0.84 1.0
y 0 0.4 0.56 0.75 0.9 1.0
HL(Kcal/Kmol) 280 180 145 195 260 380
HG(Kcal/Kmol) 1000 1030 955 895 885 880
An equimolar feed mixture of heptane and Naphthalene is subjected to an equilibrium
flash distillation. Feed is a partial liquid gas mixture at an enthalpy of 550 Kcal/Kmol.
Determine the composition of distillate and residue.
