Quiz 1 2020

This document contains a 3 question quiz on power distribution systems. Question 1 involves drawing an impedance diagram for a power system shown in a figure and determining terminal voltages and fault currents. Question 2 involves calculating real and reactive power flows in a transmission line shown in a figure, determining voltages, and sizing a capacitor. Question 3 asks to identify the type of 8 different power quality disturbance waveforms shown in a figure. The document provides detailed instructions, diagrams, and space for answers to the 3 questions.

ECTE426/826/926 POWER DESTRIBUTION SYSTEMS

QUIZ 1 28 August 2020 Total Mark: 20

Time: 60 minutes (Moodle Site Open: 4:30pm and Moodle Site Close for Submission: 7:30pm)
Instruction to the Students: Solutions should be hand-written and submitted in the form of a PDF file through Moodle
Name: ---------------------------------- Student ID: ---------------------------- Subject Code: -------------------------
Question 1 (8 marks)
Draw an impedance diagram for the electric power system shown in Figure 1 showing all impedance marked in per unit
on a 100-MVA base. Choose 20-kV as the voltage base for generator 1, G1 circuit. The three-phase power and line-line
ratings are given below:
G1 : 90 MVA 20 kV X = 9%
T1 : 80 MVA 20/200 kV X = 16%
T2 : 80 MVA 200/20 kV X = 20%
G2 : 90 MVA 18 kV X = 9%
Line : 200 kV X = 120 Ω
Load : 200 kV S = 48 MW + j 64 MVAr

Figure 1: One-line diagram for Question 1

Determine the terminal voltage of Generator 1, G1 if the transmission line is disconnected due to a three-phase short-
circuit fault in the line and only Generator 1, G1 is operating to serve the load. Also determine the fault current during
the fault.

Answer:
Question 2 (8 marks)
Calculate real power, P and reactive power, Q flow in the line shown in Figure 2. Calculate the voltage at the receiving
end of the line. Determine the voltage drop between sending end and receiving end. If the receiving end voltage is lower
than the sending end voltage, compute the size of the capacitor in kVAr, which will recover the voltage to the same
value of the sending end. Calculate the value of C. Note that V1 is in Volt, Z is in Ohm.
