    WASTE MANAGEMENT AT SCHOOL

    What is Waste?

    Waste is mainly composed of unwanted or unusable materials. Waste is


    any substance which is discarded after primary use or is worthless,
    defective and of no use.
    Why is Waste Management important?

     If nobody manages food waste, in a few days it will contaminate


    and may lead to diseases.
     Waste management is important because there is no way that
    humans are going to stop producing waste, thus managing it and
    keeping it to the least may help us.
    Waste Management: Simple or complex?

    Many people feel that waste management is a simple affair (simply


    putting waste into a vehicle and unloading it at a dump) If this were
    true, then why do so many towns suffer from unattended
    refuse,blocking streets and drains, flies, mosquitoes and rats, which
    spread disease and degrade urban environments?

    So, in our country, a proper waste management system is an urgent


    necessity. And thus, in line with the common creed “catch them
    young”, schools have become an important focal point. Schools
    accumulate tons of waste from paper and computers to food and
    books. Sharing knowledge on proper waste management in schools will
    influence positive change within schools leading to healthy
    environments of our country eventually.

    There is a large number of wastes produced in our school. In which,


    Paper comprises of 80% of waste. Children from primary classes
    produce more waste than secondary classes. Our students think that
    throwing waste is very easy, just pick it up and toss it into the dustbin,
    but it isn’t. Last year, our school council has explained how important is
    it to save paper and use it wisely and how to discard trash (For wet
    waste we use green dustbins and for dry waste, we use blue dustbins).

    Our school uses the three R’s to reduce waste which is:

     Reduce
     Recycle
     Reuse

    The waste is then processed by the Municipal Council of Panchgani by


    creating a compost which is very essential for plants.
    Today’s Scenario

    For the last few years, we all know that there is a growing scientific
    concern about our global environment. Very few cities in developing
    countries have proper facilities for disposal of all kind of wastes.
    Because cities generate so much of it, this is a huge problem to people
    ‘s health and the pleasure of living in a city.
    Types of Wastes in Our School.

    Papers
    Plastic
    Food from the kitchen and dining hall
    Worn out equipment

    Ways to Reduce Waste at School.

     Reuse
     Reduce
     Recycle
     Make Compost
     Not to trap paper foolishly
     Form a waste management team (which will look after the waste
    of school)
    Our school also provides excellent educational opportunities for
    creating awareness about waste and its management. Reducing,
    reusing and recycling waste material will improve the economic and
    environmental performance of the school and nation.

    Q) What happens with the rubbish? What happens to the rubbish after
    breaks?

    Ans. Each classroom is well equipped with one small dustbin for
    disposing waste. During the breaks and after the school, housekeeping
    maids collect the rubbish in to big bins and take it to the school
    backyard for segregation and further disposal.

    To know how waste management (leftover food), is carried out in our


    school, we have conducted an interview with our kitchen incharge Mr.
    Amit Kharat.

    What is the most effective thing to reduce waste?

    The most effective way to reduce waste is by using the three Rs of


    waste management.

    Recycle
