The document describes a tree planting activity project that aims to address issues related to deforestation such as reduced forest resources and increased flooding. The project objectives are to raise awareness of the importance of trees and build community relationships through a tree planting event. Residents of Luisiana, Laguna will participate in planting seedlings in barren lands. Activities will include coordinating with local officials, conducting an educational seminar, planting trees using best practices, and monitoring the trees monthly. Title

“PLANT A TREE, BUILD A FOREST.” – TREE PLANTING ACTIVITY

Introduction

Trees are very vital to life on Earth. Trees are essential to our world and offer a
wide range of benefits to our environment. The benefits from these trees spread far
beyond villages and can be felt in our homes, cities, schools, and communities. They
provide us with materials for tools and shelter. Trees supplied food and oxygen, which
are two essentials in human life. As people advance and increase their activities on
earth, trees become more and more necessary, and yet they become lesser and lesser.

In the efforts to preserve, conserve, and protect mother and ultimately the Earth
we came up with the idea of the tree planting activity. By this activity, we seek to
address disaster risk and mitigate the effects of climate change. We also want to
inculcate to the communities the importance of trees in the ecological balance.

Statement of the Problem

Deforestation has caused a reduced supply of wood and non-wood forestry

products. It also affected other environmental services such as watershed and soil
protection and had reduced biodiversity. In recent months, we have also experience
disastrous typhoons that devastated homes, farms, livelihoods, and had caused floods
which can be attributed to lack of roots that absorb runoff water.

Objectives

Plant a Tree, Build a Forest intends to take part in the ongoing call for
environmental and sustainable solutions to our contemporary problems. Specifically, the
project aims to achieve the following:
1. To raise awareness to the society in the importance of planting and saving trees,
express our concern to the environment, and diminish the unfavorable effects of
climate change
2. Build a strong relationship and camaraderie with each other by helping hand in
hand in preserving the ecology.

Prospective Participants/Clientele

The tree planting activity will be conducted in Luisiana, Laguna. This location
usually experienced floods brought by the excessive rain and runoff water due to the
typhoons such as Ulysses. It had cost a lot of damage on their farms, livelihoods; roads
are unpassable, and their homes had been submerged for days with no electricity and
potable water. More so, the benefits of this project will transcend the community and will
contribute to the larger battle against deforestation and climate change. The participants
will include the citizens of the barangay including the youth, adults, and barangay
officials.

Date and Venue

This project is meant to be implemented in the barren lands of Luisiana, Laguna.

The best time of year to plant the tree is November through March.
Method

The following steps will be followed for the success of this project:

1. Coordination with Local Government Unit

The project proponents will contact the local government units of the target
community. Initial data will be gathered including the possible site, willing
participants, and volunteers, and regarding the tree species that is non-invasive
to the local species.
2. Purchasing and Delivery of Seedlings
The group will coordinate with the provincial environment office and agriculture
office for the seedlings. After gathering the seedlings, it will be delivered to the
community. Seedlings will be entirely cost-free and upon their receipt, members
of the target community will ensure that seedlings are safe and well protected
from excessive sunshine and animals.
3. Seminar about Importance of Trees
Before the actual tree planting, a short seminar that highlights the importance of
trees in everyday life will be conducted. The seminar will be graced by a resource
person knowledgeable about the trees. The topics that will be tackled include
climate change, proper tree planting, and caring for trees.
4. Tree Planting
The following process will be followed in tree planting:
a. Digging the Hole
The planting hole should be at least twice the width of the root ball or
container to encourage the roots to grow into the surrounding soil. The sides
of the planting hole should be sloped. The hole should be no deeper than the
root ball or container to prevent the tree from settling or being planted too
deeply.
b. Backfill
Use the same soil that was taken out of the hole. If the soil is very poor and
appears to need topsoil, increase the hole size and sparingly mix in some
local topsoil (avoid using potting soil, peat moss, and soil amendments).
Remove stones and other debris. Fill the hole halfway with Backfill, then
water. Finish filling the hole with the backfill and water again. Make sure to
work the soil around the ball firmly to eliminate any air pockets. Also, make
sure the tree is vertical and properly supported, but do not pack the soil
around the trunk.
c. Mulch
The area around the tree should be mulched with woodchips, bark chips, or
pine mulch. The mulch should be 3 to 4 inches thick and cover the entire
planting area and beyond. The mulch needs to be placed in a donut or tire
shape around the trunk of the tree. The mulch must be kept away from the
trunk of the tree to keep insects away and prevent the trunk from being
excessively wet. Do not make mulch volcanoes.
d. Staking
Staking is not necessary if the tree has a proper size root ball and has not
been pruned too high. If staking is needed for support, attach them so the tree
has some sway. NEVER leave wires or straps on the tree for more than one
growing season
e. Timing for Planting
The best time of year to plant the tree is November through March.
f. Watering
g. Trees must be watered every 7 days during the first three month period
5. Monitoring
The newly planted trees will be monthly monitored to ensure that it will not dry
out and is well taken care of by the community.

Material / Resources

Materials will be sourced from the Local or Provincial Government with quantity
dependent on the production target in the proposed assumptions.

 Tree Seedlings  Round-head shovels

 Hand trowels
 Gloves
 Water source
 Wooden stakes
Expected Output

Be part of the call for environmental and sustainable solutions to our

contemporary problems.

Specifically, the project proposal completed the following:

1. Raised awareness to the society in the importance of planting and saving trees,
express our concern to the environment, and diminish the unfavorable effects of
climate change
2. Built a strong relationship and camaraderie with each other by helping hand in
hand in preserving the ecology.

Analysis and Evaluation

A surveyor evaluation form will be conducted to analyze and evaluate the project
of the tree planting activity. The respondents of the survey are the beneficiaries of the
project Plant a Tree, Build a Forest – Tree Planting Activity.

On this form, the respondents will put the corresponding number to the
statements written on the survey. Attached here is the evaluation form that will be used
to analyze and assess the activity.
