Question: Make a comparative study of the eastern and western


philosophies and explore their implication in education, religion,
economy and cultural practices in Nepal.
Answer:
The English word 'Philosophy' is termed as 'Darsan' in Nepali. The meaning of
this is to see the universe. Or to see the truth or reality in any subject is known as
philosophy ''seeing the philosophy''.

Philosophy deals with matters of life and death. It seeks to ask and to answer
questions that are the stubbornest, baffling and disturbing in the history of the
human race. 'Philosophy' is in general and how it affects and makes differences on
western and eastern society. Generally, Philosophy is universally defined as the
study of the wisdom or knowledge about the general problems, facts and situations
connected philosophy 'seeing the reality'.

Philosophy was derived from the Latin word 'Philos' and ' Sophia’, which means
'love of knowledge' with human existence, values, reasons and general reality.

"Philosophy is the knowledge of truth, virtue is knowledge of those who are the
lover of truth are philosophers."-Socrates
We can compare the Eastern and Western philosophy as follows:

1. Eastern philosophy is mainly used in Asian countries while western philosophy


is prevalent in the western parts of the world such as in the European countries.

2. Eastern philosophy is related to collectivism while western philosophy deals


with individualism.

3. Eastern philosophy takes more of a spiritual approach while western philosophy


is more hands on.

4. Eastern philosophies focus to look at an idea as a whole while western


philosophy tends to focus on the parts in an idea.

5. Both philosophies center on virtues.

6. Eastern philosophies focus on the similarities while western philosophy focuses


on the finding of differences.

7. Eastern philosophy takes its root from Confucianism, Mahayana, Buddhism and
Taiosm, it is safe to say that Eastern philosophy is classical Chinese while western
philosophy is form Rome and Christianity so it is more Latin in its roots.

8. Eastern philosophy developed more to focus specifically on human nature and


how we can achieve peace in our lives while western philosophy has always had
some major metaphysical components.

Implication of Eastern philosophies in education, religion, economy and


cultural practices in Nepal can be explained as below.

Education

Eastern philosophy derived from Islam, Confucianism, Taoism and Mahayana


Buddhism. This is fundamentally influence the system of life and certainly creates
their education system. Students learn about the subject, good values in the subject
of civics and citizenship, moral and religious values aspects such as respects for
parents, respect to elders’ loyalty, wisdom, helps to build a strong moral values
inside human capital. Eastern education is seen as 'knowledge providers' and
student act as 'knowledge receiver' instead of practicing students centered learning
which is self – discovery. It is more systematic with standardized syllabus and
timetable.

Religion

Eastern philosophy or Asian philosophy includes the various philosophies that


originated in Hinduism. It is also called oldest religion in the world and is
traditionally called Sanatan dharma. It believes more than one god, reincarnation,
heaven. It is common to worship more than one god. Religious in Nepal is a wide
diversity of groups and beliefs. This philosophy is derived of groups and beliefs.
This philosophy is derived from Islam and Buddhism also in practices of Nepal.

Economy and Culture

Eastern philosophy includes various philosophies traditionally, eastern cultures and


countries in the cultural sphere are strongly influenced by Confucianism,
Buddhism etc. Eastern philosophy is holistic it concerned with general knowledge.

Implications of Western philosophies in education, religion, economy and


cultural practices in Nepal can be explained as below.

Education

Western philosophy of education comprises two schools which are traditional and
modern. It has Athens, Rome and Judeo-Christianity. It emphasizes on active
learning, student-centeredness, meaningful-learning, creativity, compliment-giving
and close teacher –student relationship.

Religion

Western religious refers to religious that originated with in western culture. It is


related in Christianity. In western religious the idea of the soul varies widely in
religious tradition. It believes in one God (Christianity), monotheists. It believes in
heaven.

Economy and cultural

Western cultural is an incredibly broad term used to describe the social norms,
belief systems, traditions, customs, values, political systems for example America.
Western cultural is most strongly influenced by the Judeo-Christian and Greece
Roman cultures.

Thus, different philosophies which result in different ways of doing things,


especially in educating the next generation.
