Applications: Conservation of A Species

The document contains 17 math problems involving calculus concepts like derivatives, rates of change, gradients, and more. Some examples include finding the rate of growth of a whale population over time, calculating the velocity and maximum altitude of a rocket, determining how the cost of electricity changes with usage, and evaluating rates of change for physical scenarios like melting ice and expanding ripples in water.

1. Conservation of a Species: A group of marine biologists at the

Neptune Institute of Oceanography recommended that a series of con-
servation measures be carried out over the next decade to save a certain
species of whale from extinction. After implementing the conservation
measures, the population of this species is expected to be

N (t) = 3t3 + 2t2 2 − 10t + 600, 0 ≤ t ≤ 100

where N (t) denotes the population at the end of year t. Find the rate
of growth of the whale population when t = 2 and t = 6. How large will
the whale population be 8 years after implementing the conservation
measures?

2. Altitude of a Rocket: The altitude of a rocket (in feet) t seconds

into flight is given by

s = f (t) = −t3 + 96t2 + 195t5 , (t ≥ 0)

a). Find an expression for the rocketfs velocity at any time t.

b). Compute the rocketfs velocity when t = 0, 30, 50, 65, and 70. In-
terpret your results.
c). Using the results from the solution to part (b) and the observation
that at the highest point in its trajectory the rocket’s velocity is zero,
find the maximum altitude attained by the rocket.

4. A curve has parametric equation x = t, y = t2 . Find gradient of the

curve at t = 2.

5. Find equation of the tangent line to the ellipse at point 3x2 + 4y 2 = 12

at point (-1, 3/2).

6. The circumference C of a circle of radius r is given by C = 2πr. Find

dC
dr nd explain what does it means?

7. The growth of population in India in the first half of the twentieth

century was approximately linear, rising from 38 million in1900 to 48
million in 1950. Find an expression for the population P million of
people t years after 1900. Also, find dp/dt. What does it present?

8. The cost C of electricity consists of a standing charge 3.02 RS. and a

charge of 2.03 Rs. per unit of electricity used. Find the total cost C
in terms of the units t. Also, Find rate of change of C with respect to
t and explain what does it means?

of side x cm and volume V cm3 . Find dVdx in terms of x. At what rate
volume is changing at x = 2?

ripples. If the radius of the outer ripple increases uniformly at the
rate of c cm per second, how rapidly is the disturbed area increasing
t seconds after the stone hits the water? Ans= 2πc2 t sq. ft per sec.
