Case 4.2: The Home Improvement Project

This document discusses a case study about scope creep in a home improvement project for the Nelsons. Scope creep occurred as problems were discovered one after another, leading to postponed decisions and increased costs for bathtub installation. The project goals and requirements shifted uncontrolled, without a clear definition of completion. This resulted in an unmanageable project with budgetary issues. While some argue this was good scope creep that improved quality, the Nelsons could have better managed scope creep through improved project planning, staying on budget, and meeting deadlines.

Case 4.2

The Home Improvement Project

What factors and forces contributed to scope creep in this case?

Project members need to know how to avoid the dangers of scope creep. Scope

creep refers to an unexpected adjustment to the scope of the project, followed by an

inappropriate change to the announced project duration and cost. In most programs,

unplanned conditions are a significant driving factor that results in scope creep. In the

above case study, problems were found one after the other, which resulted in

postponed decisions, as a result of which Nelsons had to pay a significant cost for the

bathtub installation. The goal and requirement of Nelson's bathtub installation became

such an uncontrolled shifting aim that there was no simple concept of what was deemed

complete and the project descended into unmanageable and budgetary chaos. In

Nelson’s case, instead of plain bathtubs, they continued to incorporate extra items

which increased the cost and slowed down the project.

2. Is this an example of good or bad scope creep? Explain.

Based on my opinion, this was a good scope creep because, in the long run, all

the investment they are putting into the project will pay off in the end. These changed

will result in better quality products and modification.

3. How could scope creep have been better managed by the Nelsons?

In some aspects, Nelson could have done better in planning the project overall

and doing his homework. He could have used some project management strategies in

planning the overall outcome of the project which could result in a better scope creep.

He could have done a better job staying within the project budget and meeting the

deadlines.
