Module Three Writing Assignment - John Despain

The document compares scenes from The Matrix to the concepts of "spitting out the hook" and Aikido. It analyzes how Neo both effectively and ineffectively "spits out the hook" when dealing with threats from the machines. It also analyzes how Neo's stopping of the bullets aligns with the Aikido principles of centering oneself, welcoming the energy of the opponent, and using their energy to resolve the situation favorably. Overall, the document concludes that the clip serves as a better metaphor for Aikido than for "spitting out the hook."

Prompt: This assignment is intended to activate your imagination and creativity.

I'd like for you to dig a

little deeper now and compare what you see with Neo's (Keanu Reeves) experience while being targeted
by the "machines" attacking him and the bullets coming his direction and Spitting Out the Hook. Look
beyond the violence in the clip and see if you can find any aspects of Aikido in it. How does Neo's
response align with Aikido and how does it digress? Can the scene from "The Matrix" serve as a
metaphor for Spitting Out the Hook or for the Four Steps in an Aikido Move? Can you suggest a better
or comparable metaphor?

Response: In the “The Matrix” we see both good and bad examples from both the spitting out the hook
technique and good examples the Aikido method. With regard to the spitting out the hook technique,
we can see a good and bad example of how to effectively spit out the hook. The ineffective way was
when Neo enters the room with the machine, with the door symbolizing the hook. Neo almost rushes
into the room that he figures the machines would be in. Neo would had been better off without rushing,
rather taking his time at the door to think through other potential dangers immediately past it. In this
example, Neo takes the hook but fails to spit it out once in the doorway. He is quickly wounded.

A good example of Neo spitting out the hook is towards the end of the hook. After reviving himself and
waking up, he quickly faces another round of gunfire. This time he effectively spits out the hook by
stopping the bullets. He knew from the first time that the machines would likely shoot at him again, and
he was prepared and did not take the hook. This then allows for him to kill one machine before another
two flee.

This clip also provides a good example of the Aikido model. The clip presents some form of the Aikido
model when the second wave of bullets comes down the hall. Neo centers himself by standing up and
remaining calm. He then welcomes the energy, in this case the bullets. When Neo slows down the
bullets, his is blending the energy. Lastly, he takes the encounter and leads it the way he wants to go by
destroying one of the machines.

In closing, “The Matrix” I feel can serve as a good example or metaphor for both spitting out the hook
and the Aikido model. However, I feel that the clip is a better example of Aikido then of spitting out the
hook. It comes off as more clearly Aikido then spitting out the hook. As I was familiar with both of these
items from lecture, I probably would not use this clip if I was explaining spitting out the hook to
someone for the first time.
