Assignment No. 10: 1. Define Average Access Time and Explain How It Is Measured

Average access time is the time for a read/write head to move to a spot on storage and is measured in milliseconds or nanoseconds, file compression reduces file size and disk space usage, and data transfer rate measures the time for data to travel between devices and is measured in kilobytes per second.

ASSIGNMENT NO.

10
1. Define average access time and explain how it is measured.

In storage devices, average access time is the time required for a read/write head to
move to a spot on the storage medium. And it is measured in milliseconds (ms), or thousandths
of a second. In memory, access time is measured in nanoseconds (ns), or one-billionths of a
second.

2. Explain why file compression is a factor in drive performance.

File compression is used to reduce the file size of one or more files. When a file or a group
of files is compressed, the resulting "archive" often takes up 50% to 90% less disk space than the
original file(s).

3. Define data transfer rate and describe how it is measured.

Data-transfer rate (or throughput) measures the time required for data to travel from one device
to another. If a device transfers 45,000 bytes per second, its data-transfer rate is 45 KBps.

4. Identify two drive interface standards.

The two most common interface standards are:

EIDE Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics

SCSI Small Computer System Interface.
