Ee 420: Final Examination Submit On Blackboard by 5PM On December 16, 2020 Maximum Points: 150

The document is the final exam for EE 420 consisting of 5 problems worth 30 points each, for a total of 150 points. Students are instructed to show their work and not use MATLAB design packages, though MATLAB can be used for simulation. Problem 1 involves finding the transfer function and poles for a given system, and simulating its step response. Problem 2 is a root locus design problem for a unity feedback system. Problem 3 is also a root locus design problem for a position control system. Problems 4 and 5 involve frequency response design using the data provided, including finding gain and phase margins, compensator design, and analyzing steady state error.

EE 420: FINAL EXAMINATION

Submit on blackboard by 5PM on December 16, 2020

MAXIMUM POINTS: 150

NAME: ________________________________________

RED ID: ______________________________________

150 points are distributed equally among all the five problems

Problem #1: 30
Problem #2 : 30
Problem #3 : 30
Problem#4 : 30
Problem #5 : 30

Instructions:
Show all the steps used to answer the questions
Do not use MATLAB design package to answer these questions
MATLAB is used to simulate the sytems for verification only
MATLAB listing without proper explanation will not be accepted
1. Consider the following system

D(s)
R(s) + 𝐾(𝑎𝑠 + 1)(𝑏𝑠 + 1) 1 C(s)
𝑠 𝑠9 + 3.6 𝑠 + 9

Assume R(s) = 0

a) Find the transfer function C(s)/D(s)

b) Find K, a, b such that the three poles of the above transfer function are at s = -10, −2 ± 𝑗3.4641
c) Using the values obtained above simulate the response of the system using MATLAB to unit step
disturbance

2. (Root Locus design)

A unity feedback control system has the following forward path transfer function:
𝑲
𝑮(𝒔) =
𝒔𝟐 (𝒔 + 𝟒)(𝒔 + 𝟏𝟐)
Design a phase lead compensator to yield a closed-loop step response with 20.5%
overshoot and a settling time of 3 seconds. Assume that the zero of compensator is placed
at s = -0.02, find the location of the pole and K.

3.(Root Locus Design)

A position control system is given below:
R(s) 0.004 C(s)
𝐾
(𝑠 + 40) 𝑠(𝑠 + 0.505)

Design a compensator(s) for the system using root locus methods to satisfy the following:
a) Percent overshoot =10%. b) settling time = 1 second. c) Kv = 1000
4.. (Frequency response Design)

The open loop frequency response data for unity feedback system is given on the next
page.
Use the frequency response data to answer the following
a) Find the gain and phase margin for the uncompensated system
b) Is the closed-loop system stable?
c) If the closed-loop system is stable, what is the maximum delay allowed before it
becomes unstable?
d) Design a phase lead compensator to achieve the phase margin of 30 degrees

5. (Frequency response design)

Using the frequency data given on the next page
a) Design a phase lag compensator to achieve a phase margin of 30 degrees
b) What is the steady state error for unit ramp?
c) Design a lag compensator to decrease the steady state error to ramp to one half of
calculated in part b) without disturbing the transient response.
