1. What are the two options for identifying students with learning disabilities?

Briefly summarize
each one.

The first is the IQ-Achievement Discrepancy Model. The IQ-Achievement Discrepency works
by taking a students scores on individualized tests and assessing the sudents overall IQ. Then
the test results are analyzed for discrepancies that should be tended to. The second is
Response to Intervention Approach (RTI). This system works by individualizing students
needs. It’s an “as needed” kind of system, where you deal with discrepancies as they happen,
instead of waiting for multiple problems to arise for a child to be assessed. There are a few
different types of intervention. Tier 1 is essentially full-class general teaching. Tier 2 is small
group intervention, where a teacher would work with small groups of struggling kids. They might
do this only for a few months, until the students catch back up. Tier 3 is individual intervention. A
student (who is most likely struggling more than their peers) will work one-on-one with a teacher
for maybe up to a whole school year to get the help they need.

2. List at least four benefits of using an RTI approach with struggling students.

1. Interventions can be put into place a lot sooner with RTI than the IQ model.

3. Compton is a first-grade student at Rosa Parks Elementary School. His teacher, having
administered a universal screening measure, has identified Compton as a struggling reader.
Name and explain the first step in the RTI approach that she should consider when trying to help
Compton. Keep in mind that Rosa Parks uses the standard protocol approach.

Compton should first be put in a small group with other students who are also potentially
struggling. This way there is a smaller amount of kids for the teacher to focus on and work with,
so the students will receive more one-on-one attention and help to catch up to the rest of their
peers.

4. Assume that your recommendation for Question 3 was implemented; however, Compton’s
progress continues to be insufficient. Name and explain the next step in the RTI approach.

Compton should then receive a more intense, one-on-one instruction and be assessed for
learning disabilities. Maybe Compton could benefit from some special education services, like a
tutor and private testing.
