This dissertation entitled, From Alienation to Integration: A Study on M.G

Vassanji’s The Book of Secrets is the analysis to understand the Canadian writer M.G

Vassanj’s views on the life of alienation affecting the Shamsi community who have

migrated first to East Africa then to London. And he describes the cultural conflicts that

the young generation had to face in their new settlement, away from their home land.

The Introductory chapter gives a glimpse to the trance in Canadian and diasporic

literature : its hopes, features and uniqueness in various aspects . Moreover it introduces

the author and gives an introductory view to the novel chosen for the study.

The second chapter The Cultural consciousness describes how the characters as

Asian are conscious about their Indian culture and strive hard to maintain their native

culture and culture in their adopted land.

The third chapter Ordeals of Dislocation focuseson Vassanji’s views on

dislocated people’s sufferings in the alien land. It also aims to study the pathetic condition

and the suffering of people during the war time.

Fourth chapter Summation concludes the whole project and presents the authors

message to all the readers it also presents his uniqueness in handling themes.
