Lumangtad, Genesis C.

Day 3

1. Interview faculty members through the phone. Ask them to identify which among
the theories are applied in the management of their school.

- According to the a faculty member I interviewed, Ms. Rhea C. Lumangtad, in the

school where she is working, they adhere to Weber’s Bureaucratic Theory because
their managers are organized into hierarchical layers and that there are people
who are given the task to be the head of a particular department namely teachers-
in-charged. Those teachers-in-charged, are chosen based upon their proficiency
and competency level. They are the ones who receive information from the
principal and are the ones who disseminate to the teachers under them. In their
school, they are divided by departments and every department has a particular job
to do. This is how their school divides the task and make the task easier to achieve.

2. Identify the leadership functions of teachers within your school. Find out their
contributions within the school.

In our school, teachers have different functions and those are:

 Grade Level/Subject Coordinator
Of course, all teachers not just in our school are grade level or
subject coordinator because that belongs to the nature of their job.
Every teacher has a subject matter that he/she holds or teaches.
 Department Chair/Coordinator
In school, there are teachers who are considered as department
chair or coordinator. They are in-charged of being a head of every
department. They are also in-charged of creating activities together
with their subordinates in every occasion especially when the
occasion is in line with their department or field of specialization. For
instance, English month, Mathematics month, Buwan ng Wika etc.
 Curriculum and Assessment Specialists
This is one of the jobs of the teachers. They contribute to the making
and checking of curriculum and that they are the ones who
implement the curriculum inside the classroom. They help giving
insights about what the learners’ needs and what suit them the best.
 Mentor/Coach
Teachers’ job has no limitation. Beyond teaching, they are also
people who motivate us and give us advices as to what we need to
do to cope with our studies—we can even seek life advices from
them. Teachers can also be coaches be it in sports, academics,
journalism etc. Since they are more experienced than us they can
impart some of their learnings with us to enhance what lacks on us.
 Learning Facilitator
I think this word best describes the teachers especially in the 21 st
century. Being a facilitator means teachers no longer need to spoon
feed the learners with what is inside the book. Their job has shifted
to just facilitate the learners during the educative process. They are
the ones who will identify whether or not the learners acquired the
correct information they need to learn. In short, teachers being
facilitators are people who add information to the class since learners
are the ones who mostly speak inside the classroom.

4. Identify and explain how students will benefit from the reforms initiated by the
government in the Department of Education.

- Indeed, the Philippine education system has been into a lot of various reformation
bearing only one goal; to make it suitable and relevant to the learners’ diverse and
dynamic needs and allow them to get the quality of education that will help them
shape their future. The latest reformation that the Philippine education system has
embarked is the implementation of the k to 12 program. The K to 12 Program
covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary
education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School
[SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong
learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills
development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

The benefits of this reformation in Philippine education are:

a) It strengthens the foundation of education in the country – As early as

kindergarten, the learners are already exposed to education enhancing their
competence and teaching them simple ideas or concepts which later will
become complex as they move forward in Elementary, High school, Senior
High School, and College. This refers to as spiral progression.
b) It makes the curriculum relevant to the learners – it is no secret that the goal
of education in general is to instill information in the minds of the learners;
however, the information that the learners accumulate must be in line with
their needs and that it should be useful to them, hence, curriculum has to
be relevant to the learners for better learning quality.
c) It helps building learners’ proficiency- K to 12 entails approaches that make
learners the focal point of the educative process. For instance, the learner-
centered approach to teaching is the most common approach being used
inside the classroom. This approach allows learners to be the ones to impart
information to their fellow learners and the teachers being just the
facilitators. This way, the learners will gain confidence talking and sharing
his or her thought inside the classroom which will result to better
understanding and proficiency. The more learners are engaged in talking,
the more they learn and the more they become more proficient.
d) It ensures integrated and seamless learning – what makes the k to 12
subjects effective for learning is that they are interconnected with other
disciplines. Meaning, a subject does not only focuses on its area. The
teacher may use other subject or topics to be integrated in that subject for
the learning process to become effective to the learners and to ensure
understanding.
e) It gears learners up for the future – K to 12 education is very sophisticated
that it prepares the learners to become globally competent individuals with
enough knowledge that can match those academically-advanced countries.
This vision of k to 12 alone is way helpful to uplift the educational system of
the Philippines making the country as competent and knowledgeable as
other nations.
f) Lastly, this reformation will nurture the holistically developed Filipinos – with
the help of this reformation, the learners will be able to achieve proficiency
and mastery in various disciplines making them a well-educated and
competent people capable of making an impact to the country.
5. Ask a Principal/Administrator of a particular school on how assignments are
delegated by the top management to lower-level managers.

- In school, principals are the ones who hold the highest position. They juggle
everything from budgeting to supervising food service in order to run a school
efficiently. With activities ranging from reviewing test results to grappling with high-
level student disciplinary problems are all under the responsibility of principals. As
such, delegation is seen as an effective technique to divide the workload that the
principals have on their plate. The tasks are distributed over a meeting of the
school faculties. The principal holds the power to choose what task should be given
to every member of the school. With this, the tasks will be handled efficiently and
be accomplished successfully.

Note: the answer in number 5 was based solely on my understanding and observation
due to failure of receiving an answer from the principals whom I reached out to have an
interview. I tried to insist asking for a little amount of their time to ask this question but
they all declined politely explaining how busy and loaded their schedules were. As a
result, I respected their decision and came up with another plan and the only possible
plan I could think of is to undergo thorough reading on the internet and scrutinize the
meaning of the question.
