Homework 1

1. Two advantages of digital data as compared to analog data are how they are easier they

are to transmit and how there are less errors when transmitting, giving more exact data.

2. An analog quality other than temperature and sound is acceleration. There are also other

quantities such as time, speed, distance, etc.

3. Three common products that can have either a digital or analog output are computers,

handphones, and digital watches.

4. The difference between positive and negative logic is how positive logic defines bit1 as a

high voltage and 0 as a low voltage; whereas negative logic is the opposite and defines 1

as a low voltage and 0 and a high voltage.

5. A. 11010001

B. 000101010

6. A. HIGH, LOW, HIGH, HIGH, HIGH, LOW, HIGH

B. HIGH, HIGH, HIGH, LOW, HIGH, LOW, LOW, HIGH

7. A. rise time: 10%*10V= 1 V and 90%*10V=9 V.

At 1V, the time is about 0.25us and at 9V, the time is about 0.80 us.

Rise time= 0.80 us – 0.25 us = 0.55us

B. Fall time: 10%*10V= 1 V and 90%*10V=9 V. At 1 V, the time is about 3.45 us, and

at 9V, the time is about 2.85 us.

Fall time=3.45 us – 2.85 us = 0.6 us

C. pulse width: 50%*10V = 5V

At 5V, the times are about 0.5 us and 3.2 us.

Pulse width = 3.2 us – 0.5 us = 2.7 us

D. Amplitude: height of the graph, which is 10 V.

8. Period = 4 ms – 0 ms = 4 ms

9. Frequency = 1/Period = 1/(4ms*1s/1000ms) = 250 Hz

10. The pulse waveform in Figure 1-61 is periodic because it shows the same pattern within

the same time interval.
