Tutorial Sheet No - Diffraction

1. The document provides tutorial information on diffraction and interference patterns produced by double slits. It includes questions about calculating properties of double slit patterns such as the number of interference fringes within the central maximum for different slit separations and widths. 2. Additional questions calculate slit widths and separations based on observed diffraction patterns, and require determining whether observed intensities of interference fringes are correct. 3. The document also includes exercises involving concepts such as the requirements to observe a specific number of fringes within the central maximum, and how diffraction patterns change with the slit separation to width ratio.

(Tut Sheet on Diffraction & Interference ) [NK]

_________

1. (a) for d=2a, in the adjacent figure, how many interference fringes lie in the central diffraction envelope ? (b) if
we put d = a, the two slits coalesce into a single slit of width 2a. Show that combined expression for the double -
slit interference and diffraction reduces to the diffraction pattern for such a slit.
2. Light of wavelength 440 nm passes through a double slit, yielding the diffraction pattern of intensity I verses

deflection angle  as shown in the figure. Calculate (a) the slit width and (b) the slit separation. (c)
Verify the displayed intensities of the m = 1 and m = 2 interference fringes.
3. What requirement must be met for the central maximum of the envelope of the double-slit
interference to contain exactly 11 fringes.
4. Show that for a double –slit diffraction pattern, if d = ma ( where ‘d’ is the slit separation and ‘a’ slit
width), the number of bright fringes (or parts thereof) within the central diffraction pattern will be
equal to 2m.
5. A Narrow single slit (in air) in an opaque screen is illuminated by infrared from a He-Ne laser at
1152.2 nm, and it is found that the centre of the tenth dark band in the Fraunhofer pattern lies at an angle of 6.2  off the central axis.
Please determine the width of the slit. at what angle will the tenth minimum appear if the entire arrangement if immersed in water (n w =
1.33) rather than air (na = 1.00029)?
6. (a) Design a double slit system in which the fourth fringe, not counting the central maximum, is missing. (b) What other fringe, if any,
are also missing?
7. Deduce the missing orders for a double slit Fraunhofer diffraction pattern, if slit widths are 0.16mm and they are 0.80 mm apart.
8. Consider the case when slit width is 8.8 x 10 -3 cm, and separation is 7.0 x 10 -2 cm and  = 6.328 x 10-5 cm. How many interference
minima will occur between the two diffraction minima on either side of the central maximum?
9. In a double slit diffraction, calculate (i) the distance between the central maximum and first minimum of the fringe envelope and (ii) the
distance between any two consecutive double slit dark fringes.
Given data:  = 5000Å, Slit width = 0.02 mm, spacing between two slits = 0.10 mm, screen to slit distance = 100cm
10. The double-slit arrangement is illuminated with light from a mercury vapour lamp filtered so that only the strong green line (  = 546
nm) is visible. The slits are 0.12 mm apart, and the screen on which the interference pattern is appears is 55 cm away. (a) What is the
angular position of the first minimum? Of the tenth maximum? (b) what is the distance on the screen between the adjacent maxima?
11. A broad source of light ( = 589 nm) illuminates normally two glass plates 120mm long that touch at one
end are separated by a wire 0.048nm in diameter at the other end (Figure shown). How many fringes
appear over the 120 – mm distance

12. A soap film (n=1.33) in air is 320 nm thick. If it is illuminated with white light at normal incidence, what
color will it appear to be in reflected light?
13. In Newton’s rings apparatus is used to determine the radius of curvature of a lens. The radii of the n th and (n+20)th bright rings are
measured and are found to be 0.162 cm and 0.368 cm, respectively, in light of the wavelength 546 nm. Calculate the radius of the
curvature of the lower surface of the lens.
14. In the newton’s rings experiment, show (a) that the difference in radius between adjacent rings (maxima) is given by
1
∆ r =r m +1−r m ≅ √ λ R/m
2
Assuming m>>1; and (b) that the area between adjacent ring (maxima) is given by
A=πλR
Assuming m>>1. Note that this area is independent of m.
