3. CUTTING DIES

Cutting dies are used to cut the metal. They utilizes the cutting or shearing action. They prepare
blanks for further operations like bending, forming and drawing etc. Common cutting dies are
blanking, piercing, compound etc.

a) CLASSIFICATION OF CUTTING DIES

BLANKING DIES: These dies are used

to cut about a complete contour from the
stock material. The article, punched out is
called a ‘blank’ and it is the required
product. The hole and metal left behind is
discarded as waste or scrap. For
blanking, the clearance is always
provided on the punch side and die is
made accurate.

b) PIERCING DIES: These dies are used

to punch or cut-out any opening into a
blank or a semi-finished product. In
these dies, the hole is the desired
product and the material punched out to
form the hole being waste or scrap. In
these dies, it is not necessary that a
circular hole is produced, they can be of
any shape and form. e.g. square,
rectangle or any other irregular shape.
In these dies, clearance is provided in
the die and the punch is made accurate
as per the required size. Piercing Die

c) INVERTED DIES AND COMPOUND DIES
i. INVERTED DIES: On conventional dies, the punching element is generally in the punch
holder and the die is carried on the die shoe attached to the bolster. Some times this
arrangement is reversed and the punch is mounted on the die shoe. This type of die is called
an ‘Inverted die’ and its advantage is that there is little possibility of thin blanks being bent.

c) SECONDARY OPERATION DIES
i) NOTCHING DIES
Notching dies removes a small amount of material from either or both edges of the strip or
blank. It serves to shape the outer contour of the workpiece in progressive dies or to remove
excess material before a drawing or forming operation in a progressive die. The excess metal
allows the metal to flow or form without interference from excess material on the sides. In the
notching die the punch may act on two sides or three sides but never on all sides.

ii) TRIMMING DIES

The trimming dies removes the distorted or the excess metal from deep drawn shapes or
forged parts which imparts a certain shape to the sides of strip or a component.

iii) SHAVING DIES

Shaving dies generally involves
finishing operations in which very
small amount of material is removed
from the edge of the blank or pierced
hole. In these dies, no cutting
clearance is made. Its objective is to
obtain straight, smooth sidewall to
accurate dimensions.

iv) PARTING OFF DIES

The parting off dies separates the
work material along a straight in a
double line cut. It usually occurs in
final stages of progressive dies.
These dies are frequently used when
the component shapes are more
complicated in one direction and
straight in another.

v) CUT OFF DIES
Cut off dies separates the work material along a straight line in a single line cut. These dies are
used to chop-up the scrap strip selection as it leaves the die. It occurs in final stages of
progressive dies and produces no scrap.

vi) PERFORATING DIES

The perforating dies are used to produce series of evenly spaced holes in a regular pattern on
a sheet metal. In perforating dies the number of punches and dies depends upon the number
of holes to be produced.
