The document discusses experiments on open circuit characteristics of a separately excited DC generator at different speeds and load characteristics of DC shunt and cumulative compound generators. Key results are that open circuit voltage increases with field current, shunt generator voltage decreases sharply with load, and cumulative compound generator voltage remains almost constant with load.

Objectives

 To experiment the open circuit characteristics of a separately excited DC

generator with the field variation at different speed.
 To study load characteristics of a DC Shunt Generator.
 To observe and record the behavior the DC cumulative Compound
generator under loading conditions.

Background
In this experiment we were able to measure the terminal voltage, load
currents and nominal speed in circuits with motors and generators using Cassy
Lab as we connected circuits as instructed and used the computer program in
order to get the data we needed.
Also, we were able to get all data and get the behavior of load characteristics in
Shunt and Cumulative Compound DC Generators.

B. Generator Open Circuit Characteristics

When having constant nominal speed and increasing the current, we will
have increasing No-Load Voltage.

C. Shunt DC Generator Load Characteristic

When having the nominal speed almost constant and increase the load
current, we find that the terminal voltage decreases.
Figure C-1: Load Current vs. Terminal Voltage

We notice a sharp decline in the graph. The decline is due to the field winding is
connected in parallel with the supply voltage i.e. same voltage is across the armature
winding and the field winding. So, during the short circuit condition the voltage
almost becomes zero, this will make the voltage across the terminals of field winding
to be zero too. This will also make the current through that winding to be nearly zero.
As the current is minimal, it is not sufficient to produce the required flux and hence
the EMF induced is almost zero.

D. Cumulative Compound DC Generator Load Characteristic

When having the nominal speed almost constant and increase the load voltage
we notice that the terminal voltage remains almost constant (slight decrease).

Figure D-1: Load current vs. Terminal voltage

In the figure above we notice a comparison between shunt (black line) and
cumulative generators (red line). In which, we conclude that there is a huge
difference in their behavior as the shunt shows sharp decline. Meanwhile,
cumulative shows almost constant behavior.

Discussion and Conclusion

In conclusion, we found that when having constant nominal
speed and gradually increasing the load current will result in
increase of terminal voltage in O.O.C, sharp decrease in shunt
generator and almost constant behavior in cumulative compound
generators.
We were also able to find all the desired variables, but we faced a
huge problem that affected our results as the table we were working
on (Table 6) had some issues which had a massive effect on the
results we got. But in general, we got the idea of the generators and
motors and also the general behavior was known and was not
affected by the issue we faced.
