Review Questions

1. What is the difference between a game of skill and a game of chance? Which
kind of game will reliably have the same person win most times they play?

The difference between a game of skill and a game of chance is that in a game
of chance both players have an equal chance to win assuming the rules don’t
favor one particular player while a game of skill will usually favor the person that
understands the rules and mechanics of the game so usually someone who has
played the game longer than the other, therefore a game of skill will usually be
more one sided when 2 people repeatedly play against each other.

2. What is gameplay? Provide one example from either Tic-Tac-Toe, Tetris, or

Monopoly.

Gameplay in Tetris would be the actions the player can take like rotating the
block they are given and speeding up the block going down.

3. What is a “personal record”? Provide an example.

A personal record would be a players personal goal to complete while playing a

game. A personal record could include time to complete a game, wins in a row,
etc...

4. Name at least one “game of chance” and why it falls into that category.

A game of chance would be something like Blackjack. Blackjack is a game of

chance because you winning depends on what cards the dealer draws for you
and what cards the dealer has drawn for themself. These cards come out of a
deck that is shuffled randomly.

5. Explain what pseudorandomness is and how a world-building game like

Minecraft uses it.

Minecraft uses pseudorandomness with the world generation. For each different
Minecraft game that you generate you will be getting a completely different world
and there are an estimated 18 quintillion different worlds that can be generated.
Critical Thinking Questions

1. What are the basic elements all games have in common? What is an
example of each of these elements as they are used in the hand game of
Rock, Paper, Scissors?

All games have players, rules, a goal and feedback. Rock, Paper,
Scissors has 2 players that compete against each other, an example of

rules in the game would be that each player has to choose whether to go
rock, paper or scissors at the same time, the goal in Rock, Paper,
Scissors is to win by choosing paper while the other player chose rock,
choosing rock while the other chose scissors or choose scissors while the
other chooses paper and feedback in the game could just be described as
one of the players seeing who wins the game based on what action they
and the other player chose.

2. This unit described play as “essential to learning, growing, and developing

resiliency.” Give an example of a game not mentioned in this unit and use
two or three examples to show how your chosen game has helped
humans acquire knowledge,or develop resiliency or social skills in some
way.

An example of a game would be Sims. This game shows people what it is

like to live on your own and have to take care of yourself. Sims also helps
you manage money. Being able to make decisions on what you can afford
while building your home grows skills on money management. Sims also
teaches humans that certain actions will have different reactions. You can
make your Sim act a certain way. Depending on your choices you Sim
could be loved by others, neutral or even hated by others.
3. Describe three game mechanics you might find in a simulation-style racing
game you are playing with a friend.

Three game mechanics would the movement in the game like drifting,
speeding up or slowing down, the second example would be playing
catch-up if someone is in front of you in Mario Kart you can throw a blue
shell at them to stun them for a short period of time to catch up to them
and the third could be choosing to edit your car to your liking for example
letting the user put whatever engine they want in their car or letting them
change tires based on how much traction they provide.

4. Pick one of the following games: Minesweeper, solitaire, or poker. For the
game you choose, explain at least one part of the game that is based on
chance and at least one part of the game that is based on skill.

A part of Minesweeper that is purely luck is the first tap you have no idea
what is on the board until you commit to the first click and after that it is
more skill than luck but still can resort to luck at some points. An example
of skill in Minesweeper would be after your first tap if there are any
covered tiles diagonally touching one of the number 1s that was revealed
that tile is 100% a bomb.

5. Describe a strategy that you could use to win the recess basketball
shooting game HORSE. Analyze your strategy’s risks and rewards.

A strategy to the game horse would depend on your personal strengths

like if you were good at shooting 3 pointers you should probably opt to go
to the 3 point line and shoot from there. A risk to that strategy is if your
opponent is better at shooting 3 pointers than you, you will most likely
lose. A reward of this strategy is shots that are further away have a more
likely chance to get the opponent a letter.
