Topics:

1. Comparing Numbers
Example: 6, 57,870 > 6, 57,087

2. How to make numbers Using given Digits

Example: 5,6,0,8 (Greatest Number: 8,650; Smallest Number: 5,068)

Note: In smallest Number, 0 will never come in first place; it will come always in second and
in greatest number at last (means at ones place).

3. Place Value: Place value of each digit

Example: 3,479 (in this Number place value of 3=3000, 4=400, 7=70, 9=9)

4. Number System: Indian System of numeration:

International System of numeration:

Q3 (c) & (d) to be solved as homework

Q4 (c) & (d) to be solved as homework

Exercise 1.2

Ans = 7,707 tickets

Q 2 to be solved as homework

5
Hint : 8,00,000 ÷ 4,500 (you can remove the last two zeroes from numerator and denominator; so,
the the new values will be 8,000 ÷ 45 ; Now, Divide and find the answer)

Ans=177 boxes can be loaded in the van

6
Hint : Solve the sum by Division

Ans = 180 glasses are required

5 . Estimation

To estimate means to find something close to the correct answer. In number of

situations, we have to estimate the outcome of number of operations. This is
done by rounding off the numbers involved and getting a quick, rough answer.

EXERCISE 1.3 (TB Pg.No: 23)

9
Ten more examples:

10
11
(d) 439348 - 48365

Rounding off to nearest hundreds

489348 - 48365 = 439300 - 48400

= 440900

Rounding off to nearest tens

489348 - 48365 = 4393 50 - 48370

= 440980

Four more examples are as follows:

(i) 4853 + 662

Rounding off to nearest hundreds Rounding off to nearest tens

4853 + 662 = 49O0 + 700 4853 + = 4850 + 660

= 5600 = 5510

(ii) 775 - 390

Rounding off to nearest hundreds Rounding off to nearest tens

775 - 390 = 300 - 400 775 - 390 = 780 - 390
= 400
390

(iii) 6375 - 2875

Rounding off to nearest hundreds Rounding off to nearest tens

6375 - 2875 = 6400 - 2900 6375 - 2875 = 6380 - 2330

3500
= 3500

(iv) 8246 - 6312

Rounding off to nearest hundreds Rounding off to nearest tens

3246 - 6312 = 8200 - 6300 8246 - 6312 = 8250 - 6310

1900 = 1940

12
Round off 578 and 161 to nearest hundreds
598 rounded off to 600 and 161 rounded off to 200

600 x 200 = 120000

Ans: 120000

(b) 5281 x 3491

Rounding off by general rule,

5281 and 3491 rounded off to 5000 and 3000 respectively

Estimated product = 5000 x 3000

= 1, 50, 00,000

(c) 1291 x 592

Rounding off by general rule,

1291 and 592 rounded off to 1000 and 600 respectively

Estimated product = 1000 x 600 = 6,00,000
