This document is the midterm exam for a fluid mechanics course given in fall 2020. It contains 4 questions worth a total of 20 points. Question 1 asks students to calculate the pressure drop across an air filter in two units as well as the percentage error if air density is neglected. Question 2 asks students to calculate the manometer reading for a tank containing different liquids and gases. Question 3 asks students to calculate the volume flow rate of water through a nozzle. Question 4 asks students to calculate the pressure in a smaller tube given the flow rate and upstream pressure of gasoline flowing through a contraction.

ChE-204 Fluid Mechanics-I
Fall 2020 - Mid Term Examination 3rd Semester
Department of Chemical Engineering (Attempt all questions)
Time: 2.5 hrs (8:00 AM to 10:30 AM) Total Marks = 20
Understanding of paper is a part of your examination process. Please submit the solved Answer Sheet as “ONE PDF FILE” before 10:30 AM, 4th January, 2021. [email protected] Question No. 1 (5 points; CLO-I; PLO-II; T-C3) A U-tube manometer indicates a pressure drop of 10 inches, water across an air filter. The air is at 26°C and 60 psig. (a) What is the pressure drop in lbf/in2 and in atm? (b) What percentage error is introduced if the density of the air in the manometer leads is neglected? Question No. 2 (5 points; CLO-I; PLO-II; T-C3) The tank is constructed of a series of cylinders having diameters of 0.3m, 0.25m and 0.15m as shown in Fig. 1, the tank contains oil (SAE 30), water, glycerin and a mercury manometer is attached at the bottom. Calculate the manometer reading “h”. Question No. 3 (5 points; CLO-II; PLO-II; T-C4) A nozzle is attached to a pipe that has an internal dia of 4 inches. The stream of water exiting from the nozzle has a 3 inches dia. If the pressure in the pipe just ahead of the nozzle is 180 psig. Calculate the volume flow rate of water through the nozzle in gallons per minute? Question No. 4 (5 points; CLO-II; PLO-II; T-C4) Gasoline (sg = 0.67) is flowing at 0.11 m3/s in the fabricated tube shown in Fig. 2. If the pressure before the contraction is 415 kPa, calculate the pressure in the smaller tube. Figures for Reference
