What is Manufacturing?

Manufacturing is derived from the Latin word ‘manu

factus’ (meaning ‘made by hand’)

Definition :
Manufacturing is the process of converting raw
materials into products by using various processes,
machinery and energy.

• Manufacturing will typically alter the state of the

input material (raw material), such as the shape,
chemical composition and other properties.

• Manufacturing will also add value to the final

product thus making it a value addition process.
What is Manufacturing?

However, There are many different interrelated activities can

identified under the manufacturing

• Product design and documentation

• Materials selection
• Process planning
• Production
• Quality control
• Sales , Shipping, Customer Service.
Types of Manufacturing Processes

A factory operates one of three types of manufacturing

production

Make-To-Stock (MTS) : A factory produces goods to stock

stores and showrooms.
Make-To-Order (MTO) : The producer waits for orders
before manufacturing stock.
Make-To-Assemble (MTA) :The factory produces component
parts in anticipation of orders for assembly.
