Concrete Technology: No. of Test

This report discusses determining the specific gravity of cement through laboratory testing. Specific gravity is defined as the ratio of the weight of a material to an equal volume of water. The test involves weighing an empty flask, the flask filled with water, and the flask filled with kerosene to determine the specific gravity of kerosene. Cement is then added to the flask filled part way with kerosene and reweighed to calculate the specific gravity of the cement, which is reported as 2.41 for a 50g sample. Key steps and calculations are discussed.

A REPORT ABOUT

Specific gravity of cement

Student Name: Esmat Othman ali

No. of Test: “4 “

Date:21-10-2017 Group: B
Code Name:

1
Introduction:-
At the first we will weight 400g of cement next we will
prepare amount of kerosen as to that calculated in ( specific gravity
of kerosen and cement ) test after that we will prepare a cement
paste than put the cement paste in the kerosen in the flask record
the specific gravity when we add the kerosen in to the cement in
the flask

2
Scope:
This test covers determination of the specific gravity of cement.
Specific gravity: -
Is defined as, the ratio between the weight of any material to the weight of
a
quantity of water reserves the same volume of that material.

Specification:

ASTM C188-87)

3
Apparatus:

1- Flask: A standard flask which is circular in cross section with special shape
and dimensions

2- Pan

3- Balance.

4
4- Holder.

5- Kerosene.

6-Water .

7-Cement

5
Procedure:
1- Weigh the empty flask(W1)

2- Fill the flask with water to a specified point (fixed volume) and weigh the
flask with

water (W2)
3- Remove the water from the flask then fill it with Kerosene to the same
specified
point (fixed volume) and weigh the flask with the kerosene (W3).

4- Remove some kerosene from the flask.

5-prepare (w4=50) gm. of cement and place it in the flask in small increments.

Take care to avoid splashing and see that the cement dose not adheres to the
inside of the flask above the liquid.

6
6- After all the cement has been introduced, place the stopper in the flask and
roll the flask in an inclined position so as to free the cement from air until no
further air bubbles rise to the surface of the liquid.
7- Add the kerosene to the task up to the same volume as in step 1 then weigh
the (task +kerosene +cement) (W5)

9
Discussion:
1-What is the range of cement specific gravity value?
*The range of specific gravity of cement is from 3.0 to 3.5
2-What is the usefulness of the specific gravity value of cement?
* The calculation of the quantites of mix proportions, and the mix design
3-Does the specific gravity specify the cement type?
*No it doesn’t specific gravity specify the cement type
4-What is the main step which affects the test result of specific gravity of
cement?
*The accuracy in weighing.
5-In the specific gravity test of the cement we usually use Kerosene
instead of water. Why?
* we cannot use water because water reacts with the cement, Kerosene is
better on this test because it was not reacts with cement.
