Listening Comprehension Passage
Beach Pollution
Have you seen a polluted beach? No one likes to go to a beach that is full of garbage. Unfortunately, beach pollution is a persistent
problem. Scientists estimate that around eight million tons of plastic trash is being washed into the oceans every year and it will increase
tenfold by 2020.
The pollution mainly comes from solid waste, such as bottles, plastic bags, picnic plates and cigarette butts, which are left behind by beach
visitors. Other sources of pollution include sewage sludge from treatment plants, storm water runoff, oil spills and polluted runoff from
farms, roads and cities.
Beach pollution does not only cause aesthetic problems, but, more importantly, it can also damage marine life and pose a serious health
threat to people. Sea animals can be killed by the ingestion of plastic, rubber or foam because they often mistake solid waste for food.
Some animals can even drown from entanglement or be choked by plastic rings. On the other hand, sea water that is polluted by viruses
and bacteria can cause illness or infection to people, especially to children and the elderly with weak immune systems.
There are several things that we can do to keep our beaches clean. The easiest thing to prevent beach pollution is to avoid littering at the
beach. If you see trash left by someone else, pick it up and throw it away in the nearest trash can. At home, recycle your trash or throw it
away properly. Trash and other solid waste that reach rivers will flow all the way to the oceans and eventually wash up on our beaches.
Beach pollution is a massive problem, but with a little help from everyone, it can be fixed. Your small daily actions can have big impacts on
the environment because no action is too small for nature conservation.
Dictation Passage
Patong Beach
Patong Beach is the most popular beach in Thailand. It is located on the west coast of Phuket Island, in the southwest of Thailand. Its wide
coastline and soft white sand have attracted tourists from around the world, especially Western vacationers. The best time to visit Patong
Beach is from November to April when the water is very flat and calm.
Patong Beach has complete facilities. There are plenty of parking spaces along the beach road and public toilets are spaced out along the
beach. Restaurants, bars and cafes can be easily found on the beach or on the road outside the beach area. You can also find small stalls
and wandering vendors selling food and drinks, sarongs and beach mats, sunglasses, handcrafted souvenirs and more.
Patong beach is a busy beach area. Besides relaxing on the beach, you can also do watersports, such as jet-skiing, parasailing, water-skiing,
wakeboarding and riding banana boats. Kayak and windsurfing equipment are also available for rent. Other interesting activities include
snorkeling, beach volleyball and Thai massages.
Because of the massive popularity of the beach, it can get crowded during the holiday season, so it is best to come early in the morning to
find a good spot. However, if you are looking for peace and quiet, you might want to head elsewhere.
