TUTORIAL: CHAPTER 2c

1) Explain the term of modulation index. Provide the formula and graph signal in your
explanation.

2) An AM wave displayed on an oscillposcope has values of Vmax = 4.8V and Vmin =

2.5V. What is the percentage of the modulation?

3) To achieve 75percent modulation of the carrier of Vc = 50V, what is the amplitude of

the modulating signal needed?

4) The maximum peak to peak value of an AM wave is 45V. The peak to peak value of
the modulating signal is 20V. What is the percentage of the modulation.

5) Suppose that on an AM signal, the Vmaxpp value read from the graticule on the
oscilloscope screen is 5.9 division and Vminpp is 1.2 division.

a) What is the modulation index

b) Calculate the Vc, Vm and m if the vertical scale is 2V per division.

6) A standard AM broadcast station allowed to transmit modulating frequency up to

5kHz. If the AM station is transmitting on a frequency of 980kHz, compute the
maximum and the minimum upper and lower sidebands and the total bandwidth
occupied by the AM station.

7) An AM transmitter has a carrier power of 30W. The persentage of modulation is

85percent. Calculate :

a) Total power
b) The power in onesideband.
8) An antenna has an impedance of 40Ω. An unmodulated AM signal produces a current
of 4.8A. The modulation is 90percent. Calculate:
a) Carrier power
b) Total power
c) Sideband power
d) What is the power in one sideband .

9) An single sideband transmitter produces a peak to peak voltage of 178V across 75Ω
antenna load. What is the peak power?

10) An oscilloscope is used to monitor an output of a conventional AM modulator. The

input signal of the modulator are:

Determine :
a) Upper and lower side frequency
b) Modulation coefficient
c) Upper and lower sideband amplitude voltages
d) Maximum and minimum amplitude of AM modulated wave
e) Total transmitted power using conventional AM for 75Ω load.
