Zipcar Case Study

The recommendation that we can give to Robin Chase and Antje Danielson to improve their business model are
the following:

- Priority must be given to achieve the technology that will allow a better billing method for customers,
This technology should be also used to collect data about driving habits and customer preferences to
improve the value proposition and increase the customer loyalty to the brand.
- Build competence in running complex operations by hiring the right profile who will be highly
motivated by the process of launching a new business. A profile with high experience in running
operation will reassure potential investors
- Find a way to increase the utilization of the cars without harming the customer experience, this could be
done with the right technical tools that will optimize reservations and an appropriate marketing plan to
create and increase the demand.
- Be lean and flexible as much as possible, by reducing or delaying the fixed and overhead costs to keep
competitive prices compared to substitution products (rental cars)
- Accurately asses the variable costs and try to keep them the lowest possible through some technical
solutions like for instance choosing cars with low fuel consumption or partnership with a rental
company with lower lease costs same approach can be made with the insurance company and the
maintenance company, long term partnerships with lowest fees should be negotiated.
- Build accurate KPI’s linking costs to revenue and based on the real operating data so the business plan
will be more realistic.
- Try to create various ways for customers to subscribe and then book a car other than exclusively via the
website to address a larger target. In the other hand special offers like discounts could be granted to the
customers using the website in order to slowly drive all the potential customers to use the platform of
booking.
- Differentiate the offer and create other revenue streams by proposing other premium services (for
examples snacks, or cars without logos of zipcar)
- Enhance the customer experience and increase his loyalty, by rewarding best drivers (no excessive
speed, no incidents, no delays…)
- In the future expansion plan, target big cities with high density per square mile like New York, Los
Angeles and Chicago this will allow the business to grow fast and to have a very strong visibility.
- Try to clarify the organization by defining the tasks especially between the two founders, if one the
founders could not take the risk to be 100% dedicated to the project and prefer to keep a security job
this should be reflected in the capital shares by bringing other investors or maybe increase the shares of
the other founder in order to give him the motivation to carry on the project.
