1. Unit description

The ARCON STM 150 is an ultra-fast switch intended for the transfer of one load from a redundant
inverters system to a second source of AC voltage or vice-vers

It has been designed for current up to 180A in assisted cooling.

It allows the redundant inverters system to work on an ‘’ON LINE’’ or ‘’ OFF LINE’’ mode.

It is provided with :

Entering in the configuration menu through the buttons on the front panel allows the user to choose
between 2 operating modes:

• ON-LINE mode: Load supplied permanently by the inverters with assistance (general power
failure) or temporary assistance (overload, short-circuit, module break-down) from the mains if
necessary.

• OFF-LINE mode: Load supplied permanently by the mains with assistance (non conformity of
the voltage or frequency mains out of range ) from the inverter system if necessary.

1.2.1. ON-LINE CONFIGURATION

Operating principle

Fig. 1 shows the operating principle of a parallel inverter system assisted by a ARCON STM150.

In the normal state, the loads are supplied by the inverters which the emergency system holds
synchronous by means of the SY (synchronisation) process located in the ARCON STM 150.

When a fault occurs on the AC power bus of the inverters, ARCON STM 150 detects it and an
uninterrupted commutation sequence is started thanks to the 2 thyristor pairs TH1 and TH2.

After 2 seconds, if the AC power bus of the inverters is back to normal, the loads are
reconnected without cut-off, to the inverter system.

1.2.2. OFF-LINE CONFIGURATION

Operating principle

Fig.1 shows the operating principle of this second configuration.

Normally, the loads are supplied by the auxiliary source. The inverters set in parallel are running in a
no-load mode and synchronised to the mains by means of a the SY process located in the ARCON
STM 150.

ARCON STM 150 monitors permanently the MAINS and in case of any fault detected, an
uninterrupted commutation sequence is started thanks to the 2 thyristor pairs TH1 and TH2.

5 seconds after the AC mains returns to normal, the loads are reconnected, without cut-off to the
mains.

For detailed description of available controls, monitoring functions and operation please, refer to the
appropriate section.

4. Module operation

4.1. Commissioning

4.1.1. Starting with mains present:

• Set the AC power ON

The ARCON STM 150 display gives the following indication: 'LOAD ON MAINS'
• Set the DC power ON
• Set the modules DC input breakers to "ON"
• Start each inverter ON by pressing each local push button
• Turn to "ON" the front switch for modules on the ARCON STM

The ARCON STM 150 display gives the following indication :

"LOAD ON INVERTER" (If the ARCON STM is “ONLINE” configured)

If the ARCON STM is configured in “OFF LINE“ each inverter starts and runs without load.

4.1.2. Starting without mains present:

4.2. Starting and running sequence

As soon an AC voltage is connected to the mains terminal the auxiliary power supply starts.
The front switch on/off is used to start the inverters modules of the system.
The choice of configuration between “on line” and “off line” mode will govern the following steps.

In “on line” mode:

• If the mains was present before starting the inverter, the load was supplied by the mains and
will be supplied (without voltage interruption) by the inverter after the previous starting
operation thanks to the transfer conduction from thyristor pair TH1 to TH2.
• If the mains was not present, the load was not supplied and will be supply by the inverters
through the thyristor pair TH1 after the starting sequence.

In “off line” mode:

• If the mains was present before to start the inverter, the load was supplied by the mains and
will remain supplied by the mains after the previous starting operation. The inverter runs and
remains in this standby state until the mains stays in the voltage conformity range.
• If the mains was not present, the load was not supplied and will be supply by the inverter
through the thyristor pair TH2 after the starting sequence.

The default-displayed values are:

- Output voltage (i.e. Vout = 230 Volts)

- Position of the load : 'Load on inverter bus' or 'Load on mains'

The load position indicates the current path in the static switch (even if the output voltage is 0)
By pressing the push button “MENU”, the user can display informations about the system or the
ARCON STM unit.

For more details on installation and commissioning please refer to this section.

In case of trouble please refer to the section "Troubleshooting".

6. Protection and alarms

6.1. Internal electronic protection

The ARCON STM 150 static switch is provided with internal electronic protections.
All thyristors will open if the current is above 450A for 50 periods.

6.2. Fuses protection

The ARCON STM 150 static switch controller is internally protected by fuses (Type : T-2A).

6.3. Remote control and ARCON STM free potential contacts.

A remote control is available on the connector located on the rear side of the unit
Function is to Start / stop remote of inverters via external potential free contact

If the remote ON / OFF switch is not used, the pins must be short circuited

Free potential contacts are available for alarms if a controller SYS 3000 is not used in the system

Information concerning the system status are displayed on the ARCON STM 150 LCD: the load
position (mains or inverter), the functional mode (“on” or “off” line) and other usual measurements of
inverter system (see the “menu” section).

6.4. Payment protection

Payment protection is deactivated when the ARCON STM leave the factory.
It is only activated for customers in chronic state of overdue payment.
The protection only can be deactivated introducing the apposite code the customer can get
from CE+T after payment (each inverter has its own code).
See the menu “payment protection” in parametric menu to deactivate the protection.
When the protection is deactivated it becomes quite invisible for the user.
When the protection is activated, the message “limited working” is displayed every 5 seconds.
After running 90 days, the protection avoids to start the module the module becomes
unusable.

If the module runs when the time limit is reached, it continues to run but gives alarms each 10 seconds
with alarm relay and is definitively stopped after the first stop after that it is impossible to restart
the module without having to deactivate the protection.

7. Troubleshooting guide

With an ARCON STM 150 the system can only start switching “ON” the local switch of the
ARCON STM but only after the local ON push button of each inverter is switched ON.

If the system don’t start after the previous verification please contact your supplier.

7.1. Alarms and display status (Messages list)

The unit ARCON STM 150 can take a decision to transfer the load on the emergency source for
internal or external reason.

The errors list gives the various reasons to display alarms messages. In case the user identifies an
internal fault in the ARCON STM 150, the unit has to return in factory for inspection: please contact
your supplier.

7.2. Error message list

Major alarms:
Cable not conn. An internal cable is not connected
Inv Switch Fail The inverter thyristor pair has a problem (the ARCON STM is locked)
Mains Switch Fail The mains thyristor pair has a problem (the ARCON STM is locked)
Cable disconnect The internal flat cable X9 is not connected (load is supplied by mains)
RDI Bus Error The RDI bus is not connected

Other Minor alarms can appear on the second line of the display in Blinking mode:
Time elapsed The running time in relation with payment protection is elapsed
Limited running The payment protection is activated.
Overload Imax I > I nominal of the inverter
Imminent Switch Imminent supply by mains (after 5" in Off line mode)
Mains Failure Mains failure (in “on line mode”)
Inv Bus Failure Inverter system fault (in “off line mode”)
Mains Not Conform Mains voltage out of range
Inv Bus Not Conform System inverter voltage out of range (in “off line” mode)
Inv Bus off The inverter is intentionally switched off by the local front switch or by the SYS 3000
controller.
Overload back Switch Come back of the load to the inverter system if the overload disappears and the load
actual value is under the set load threshold (between 75 and 95% of the nominal
value) otherwise the load remains on mains.
Module defect One module is stopped or out of order

7.3. Menu in Factory mode.

Factory mode is a helpful menu for our engineers when you are in contact with them to analyse a
specific problem on site.

By giving those information to our R&D engineers they can help you and focus directly to your
problem.

To enter in Factory mode press the push button ↑ for at least 2 seconds.
