Tutorial 1
1. A soil has a bulk density of 1.8 g/cc at a water content of 5%. If the void ratio remains
constant, find the bulk density for a water content of 10%.
2. The true and apparent specific gravity of soil are 2.7 and 2.0 respectively. Find the void
ratio of the soil.
3. Derive the correlation between percentage air voids and dry density of soil.
4. A soil deposit has a void ratio of 1. If the void ratio is reduced to 0.6 by compaction, find
the percentage volume loss.
5. A soil sample has a weight of 0.7 kg and the volume was found to be 3.5*10 -4 m3. After
drying out, the weight was reduced to 0.6 kg. The particle specific gravity is 2.6.
Determine
a. Moisture content d. Void ratio
b. Dry density e. Porosity
c. Bulk density f. Degree of saturation
6. The weight of container is 40 gm and weight of container and wet soil sample is 100 gm.
On oven drying for 24 hrs, the weight of container with dry soil is found to be 80gm.
What is the water content of the soil?
7. While boring was being done, the soil sample was found to be saturated with kerosene
oil. The saturated unit weight of the soil was found to be 2.4 g/cc. if the specific gravity
of soil grains and kerosene oil are 2.75 and 0.89 respectively, find the dry unit weight of
soil.
8. A partially saturated sample from a borrow pit has a natural moisture content of 15% and
bulk unit weight of 1.9 g/cc. The specific gravity of solids is 2.70. Determine the degree
of saturation and void ratio. What will be the unit weight of the sample on saturation?
9. The weight of an undried specimen of clay was 34.62 gm. The oven dry weight of the
sample was 20.36 gm. Before oven drying, the specimen was immersed in mercury and
its volume found to be 24.66 cc. Assume G = 2.68. Find the void ratio and degree of
saturation of the sample.
10. A natural soil deposit has a bulk density of 1.90 g/cc and water content of 6%. Assume G
= 2.67. Assuming the void ratio to remain constant, what will be the degree of saturation
at a water content of 16%?
11. A clayey soil has a natural moisture content of 15.8%. The specific gravity of soil is 2.72.
The soil is allowed to soak up water. After some time the saturation increases to 90.8%.
Find the water content of the soil in latter case.
12. A soil has a porosity of 40%, specific gravity 2.5 and water content 12%. Find
a. The water content at full saturation.
b. The weight of the water required to be added to 100 m 3 of this soil for full
saturation.
c. The water content which can fully saturate and increase the volume by 5%.
13. A marine soil has a specific gravity of soil solids and that of sea water as 2.7 and 1.03
respectively. If the void ratio of the soil is 0.8, and unit weight of fresh water is 9.81
kN/m3, what is the saturated unit weight of marine soil?
14. For constructing an embankment the soil is transported from a borrow area using a truck
which can carry 6 m3 of soil at a time. The details are as follows.
Property Borrow Area Truck Field
(loose) (compacted)
Bulk density 1.66 1.15 1.82
(g/cc)
Water content % 8 6 14
Find the number of truckloads of soil required to obtain 100 m3 of compacted earth fill.
15. A soil is to be excavated from a borrow pit which has a density of 1.75 g/cc and a water
content of 12%. The soil is compacted to a water content of 18% and dry density
1.65g/cc. For 1000m3 of soil in fill, estimate the quantity of soil to be excavated from the
pit in m3.
