Each day my classroom will present a new challenge, some which I have never even thought of
before. All children and every situation that may arise will be different. It will be extremely important
to be prepared for any and every situation that will ascend and a classroom management plan is a great
plan.
The ideal classroom for me to be teaching in will be a second grade suburban classroom. My
management plan is made for this classroom but can be easily altered to fit any grade level. In this
detailed plan I have worked towards a few goals for my classroom. I hope to provide a safe
environment that promotes productivity and learning, foster responsibility, self-respect, and
Physical Environment
The physical environment of the classroom reflects my teaching style and is a small but huge
part of my classroom management plan. My classroom will be stimulating with posters, bulletin boards,
art, and student work covering most of the wall space. I plan to have a mostly informal room
arrangement that is inviting to all students. Whether my classroom has desks or tables I will arrange
them into small groups so that when they are provided opportunities to socialize in class or work in
groups they will always have someone near them. I think that this kind of arrangement can also free up
a lot of useful space. I will implement a new seating arrangement every 6 weeks in order to prevent
boredom and manage students who cannot handle who they are sitting by.
I think that it would be nice to have pieces of furniture in my classroom such as bean bags,
comfy chairs, and maybe even a futon or love seat. A large piece of furniture can be used for students
to sit on during read-aloud as well as during their personal work time, at the same time individual pieces
of furniture can be used. There will be a library in the room, a large table for group work, and an area
which holds a couple of computers. All of these areas will be in different sections of the room and from
my desk I will be able to see the entire classroom. There will also be plenty of personal spaces for
The lighting in the classroom will be based upon the student’s preferences. Some students work
better in well-lit areas whereas others do not. Natural lighting will be used as much as possible and
there will be lamps throughout the classroom for lighting as well. Temperature can also be very
distracting in the classroom. I will help students to be aware of their own temperature so that they will
know to bring a sweatshirt if needed that can be kept at school. Some of the furniture pieces
throughout the room will also have small throws on them that can be used in independent work time.
Psychological Environment
My classroom will be highly based upon respect and honesty, when students feel respected they
show respect back and honesty plays a big part in respect. In my classroom I will work to make sure that
every child feels respected and knows that they are a very important asset to my class. Student work
will be displayed so that students feel pride in their selves and can also be proud of what other students
have done. I think it is very important to show respect for culture and customs as well so that all
students have an understanding of diversity and respect it no matter who may walk in the classroom or
The environment in my classroom will promote students to show their personalities and
emotions whether in class or during free time. My students should all be at the point where they are
understand their emotions or at least have a pretty good grip on the way that they feel about certain
things and I think that it is important for them to express this. I want students to know that my
classroom is a safe place for them and that they can express themselves no matter what they are feeling
as long as they do it appropriately and with an understanding that there are still classroom rules. If
children cannot get along it will be important for them to talk to each other about how each is feeling
and what went wrong. I will encourage communication between all of my students in order to settle
problems with respect and honesty to one another and the classroom as a whole.
Every morning when the students come into the classroom I will be there to greet them at the
door. There will be a morning message on the board detailing things that are happening today and the
weather. Each student’s name will also be on the board so that they can come in and choose whether
or not they would like cold or hot lunch. This will help to make lunch count easier and also help me to
take attendance. When the students have chosen their lunches they will work quietly and individually
on anything they need to catch up in otherwise they can read until the morning announcement, which is
usually 5 minutes after the start of the day. This part of the morning is vital so that students know that
it is time to be in classroom mode. After the announcement the students can get ready for breakfast
and then socialize with other students. I will have this time for socialization because the students
understand already that we are in the classroom and there are rules but now any socializing that needs
to be done can be. During this time students can even get up and move to another side of the room, the
futon/loveseat, or carpet and we will read the morning message as a group. After reading morning
message we will discuss the schedule for the day which is clearly visible near the board and we will do a
different 10-15 minute activity each day on building respect, individuality, emotion, pride, or etc.
The students will know when we start and end each class by looking at the schedule but I will
also ring a bell in order to let the students know we are transitioning to another class or activity. When I
ring the bell I will clearly state what we are doing next and what they need and also give them a time
limit to be ready by and set a timer. This will help students to be able to transition quickly and neatly.
Throughout the day students can use the bathroom whenever they feel the need to as long as they put a
bathroom pass on their desk. There will be only 1 boy’s bathroom pass and 1 girl’s bathroom pass
available at any given time. Our daily schedule will include basic subjects such as reading, writing, social
studies, math, science, and either gym, art, music, or counseling every day.
At the end of the day the students will pack their bags before the last class that we have and
when they come back into the classroom we will end on a “Happy Note” that will last about 10 minutes.
Ending the day on a “Happy Note” allows for students to erase anything bad that may have happened
that day out of their minds and go home with a smile on their face. During “Happy Note” students
choose short videos to watch online that are funny or exciting, there will be a clipboard where students
will get a chance to write down a video they would like to see and there is no limit on the number of
videos that a student puts down, they are chosen at random (after I have made sure that they are
appropriate). During “Happy Note” I will also write a note to a particular student that I saw acting very
responsible, respectful, and honest in the classroom that day. I will read the note aloud and the student
can take it home to show their parents, every student will get multiple happy notes throughout the year.
I believe that it will be very important to have the rules and expectations of my classroom to be
laid out from the beginning. During the first week of school my students and I will spend most of our
time setting up our classroom rules. First I will discuss what is expected of them and why I expect these
things. After the students understand what I want out of them we will work together to make our own
classroom rules. If students suggest rules that aren’t really necessary we will talk about them as a big
picture like “You can’t poke your neighbor during class if he is writing on a piece of paper”, we can put a
rule like this in a category of not interrupting your neighbor in class. This allows for students to take
pride in the classroom rules because they have helped develop them, taking pride in their rules helps
them to better follow them. All classroom rules should be based on treating others with respect and
kindness as well as treating their schoolwork with pride by getting it done on time and doing it neatly.
Most schools implement a behavior rewards program and if there is not one implemented in my
school I will implement one in my classroom. The program will work with a chart and rewards. The
chart will have specific colors on it and students will move a magnet or some sort of clip to specific
colors based on their daily behavior. I will determine whether or not their clip is moved but they will
move it so that they feel a sense of responsibility for themselves and pride in themselves. The chart will
be similar to a rainbow and at the end there will be a pot of gold. All students will start in the neutral
zone, if they stay in the neutral zone all day they will receive one gold coin (which is made of paper) for
that day. Students can progress on the chart by helping classmates, being friendly, handing things in on
time, being respectful, and so on. Progressing to the next step of the rainbow will award them with 2
gold coins and progressing to the pot of gold will reward them with 3 gold coins. If students fail to
follow rules they will fall back on the rainbow but it is possible to work their way back up. Students can
use the coins to participate in a monthly raffle to win a prize decided on by the class and to “buy” things
from my own classroom store such as pencils, snacks, juice, books, recess, and other odds and end
thing.
If there are students who continue to behave poorly in class and are not following rules and
respecting others it will be important to first send home a letter to parents that explains what is going
on and the letter will need to be signed and returned. If there are still issues with the student it will be
important to have a meeting with parents to talk about what can be done at home and at school to help.
My school will be comprised of many classrooms and my classroom will reflect the school as a
whole. Teamwork will be important with parents, colleagues, and the principal in order to maintain a
well-balanced classroom and work towards the same school objectives and goals. I will take into
consideration all of the information that I am given and will work to make my classroom be on the same
I believe that this management plan will serve me well with all students in my classroom.
Whether or not I really will be teaching in a 2nd grade classroom is yet to be determined but my plan will
be adapted. As long as I focus on what my students need to succeed my classroom should be well
managed.
