Summary
To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

Before the start of World War I, Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay bring their eight children to
their summer home in Hebrides across from their house stood a large lighthouse.
Their 6 year old son James Ramsay desperately wants to go to the lighthouse but
Mrs. Ramsay had told him the following day they would go if the weather permits.
Mr. Ramsay on the other hand told james coldly that the weather looks to be foul.
James had held in a grudge he solely believes that his father enjoys being heartless
to James and his siblings.

The Ramsays then host a number of guests, Charles Tansley who attended admires
Mr. Ramsays work as metaphysical philosopher. Mrs. Ramsay was getting her
portrait done by a young painter Lily Briscoe who she wants Lily to marry William
Bankes an old friend of the Ramsays. Lily still stays single but Mrs. Ramsay still
decides to meddle around and arrange another marriage but between Paul Rayley
and Minta Doyle. Paul and Minta go on a walk by the beach with two of the
Ramsays Children he then proposes to Minta.

During the course of the Evening Lily bristles at outspoken comments made by
Charles Tansley, who suggests that women can neither paint nor write. Mr.
Ramsay reacts rudely when Augustus Carmichael, a poet, asks for a second plate
of soup. As the night draws on, however, these missteps right themselves, and the
guests come together to make a memorable evening.

As time passes quickly a War breaks out across Europe. Mrs.Ramsay then
unexpectedly passing away one night as well as her eldest son, Andrew killed in
battle and his sister Prue passes away from an illness related to childbirth. The
family then no longer have their vacation at the summer house. Ten years pass and
Mrs. McNab, the housekeeper, employs a few other women to help set the house in
order. They rescue the house from decay, and everything is in order when Lily
Briscoe returns.
The Ramsays set off, and Lily finds a place in the lawn to complete a painting she
started but abandoned on her last visit.. Lily puts the finishing touch on her
painting. She makes a definitive stroke on the canvas and puts her brush down,
finally having achieved her vision
