Assignment 1

1. F2 is not a vector space over the field of real numbers R, but it is a vector space over the field of three elements F3. 2. The set S={A, B, C} is not a vector space over F3= {0, 1, 2} in both cases described, as the operations defined do not satisfy the vector space axioms. 3. The constant function f(x)=1 belongs to the span of {sinx, cosx, sin2x, cos2x}.

Assignment 1
Due date: 10 Feb, 2021 before 17:00

Please write down your name and university number. Precise and adequate explanations should be
given to each problem.

1. Let F be a field. Consider the set F 2 = {(a, b)T ∶ a, b ∈ F }. For any (a, b)T , (c, d)T ∈ F 2 and
any k ∈ F , define
(a, b)T + (c, d)T = (a + 4c, b + d3 )T and k(a, b)T = (ka, kb)T .
Prove that under these operations, F 2 is not a vector space over F if F = R, but it is a vector
space if F = F3 . (As usual, 4c = c + c + c + c and d3 = d × d × d.)

2. Let S be the set {A, B, C}. In each of the following cases, we define an addition on S and a
scalar multiplication over the field F3 = {0, 1, 2}. Prove that S is not a vector space over F3
in each case.
(a)
+ A B C ⋅ A B C
A A A A 0 A A A
B B B B 1 A B C
C C C C 2 A C B
(b)
+ A B C ⋅ A B C
A A B C 0 C C C
B B C A 1 A B C
C C A B 2 B A C

3. Let V be the vector space of all real-valued functions defined on R. Determine whether the
constant function f (x) = 1 belongs to the span of {sin x, cos x, sin 2x, cos 2x}.

4. Let S = {v1 , v2 , . . . , vk } be a subset Rn such that k ⩾ n + 2.

(a) Prove that there exist c1 , c2 , . . . , ck ∈ R which are not all zero such that
c1 v1 + c2 v2 + ⋯ + ck vk = 0 and c1 + c2 + ⋯ + ck = 0. (1)
(b) A convex combination of the vectors in S is a linear combination of the form
λ1 v1 + λ2 v2 + ⋯ + λk vk , where λ1 + λ2 + ⋯ + λk = 1 and λ1 , λ2 , . . . , λk ⩾ 0.
The convex hull of a finite set is the set of all convex combinations of the vectors in this
set. Prove that we can partition the vectors in S into two nonempty subsets S1 and S2
whose convex hull are not disjoint.

5. Let A and B be two nonzero matrices in Mn×n (R) such that A is symmetric (i.e. AT = A)
and B is skew-symmetric (i.e. B T = −B). Prove that {A, B} is linearly independent.
