Cooling Scania

The document describes the cooling system of a vehicle engine. It details 17 components of the cooling system and their functions. It explains how coolant flows through the system, being pumped through the engine and radiator to regulate temperatures before returning to the expansion tank. Auxiliary systems like air conditioning, exhaust gas treatment, and heating are also cooled by the circulating coolant.

When the thermostat/double thermostat (4) opens, coolant is directed into the radiator (1)
and then flows horizontally through the cooling package. The coolant is cooled by the air
flowing through the cooling package, assisted by the fan and any head wind.
At low coolant temperatures, the thermostat is closed and all coolant circulates via the
bypass line (3) without passing through the radiator. On vehicles without retarder (15), an
ordinary thermostat is used (see 02-15 Thermostat housing – Thermostat) located at the
front edge of the cylinder block. If the vehicle is fitted with an automatic gearbox or
retarder, a double thermostat is used (see 02-15 Thermostat housing - Double thermostat)
located on the chassis.
When the engine (16) has reached normal operating temperature, the thermostat operates
in an intermediate position. This means that the coolant passes through both the bypass
channel and the radiator via the thermostat, which is open. If the coolant temperature is
high, all the coolant will flow through the thermostat and to the radiator. The outlet to the
bypass duct is then completely closed.
The coolant pump (2) pumps the coolant into the longitudinal cylinder block distributor
passage. The coolant passes through the oil cooler and then on through channels in the
cylinder block. The coolant flows around the cylinder liners and then upwards to the
cylinder heads. The coolant from the cylinder head is collected in the cylinder block.
The coolant then flows forward through the channels in the cylinder block to the
thermostat, if no retarder is fitted.
If the vehicle is fitted with a retarder or uses LNG, the coolant flows backwards through a
channel in the cylinder block to a flange pipe at the rear of the engine. From there, the
coolant flows in a loop via the retarder to the thermostat housing, which is fastened to the
frame, as well as via a separate pipe going from the engine to the LNG fuel tank. If the
truck uses LNG, the coolant heats the fuel tank heat exchanger.
Depending on the pressure in the fuel tank, gaseous or liquid fuel passes through the heat
exchanger. If liquid fuel passes through the heat exchanger, it is heated up and converted
to gaseous fuel before continuing to the gas panel. The bypass duct in the cylinder block is
closed with a plug.
If the engine is fitted with an SCR system, the coolant is taken from the same flange pipe.
This also applies if the engine is fitted with an EGR cooler.
The SCR system uses the coolant to heat the reductant tank (12). When the reductant tank
is sufficiently warm, the flow is stopped by a water valve (11).
The EGR cooler uses the coolant in order to reduce the exhaust gas temperature.
The air compressor (14) is cooled with coolant from the outlet in the oil cooler cover on
the engine.
The expansion tank (7) is connected to the engine and radiator via ventilation pipes (6&9),
which means that it also ventilates the cooling system.
There is a static line pipe (8) between the suction side of the coolant pump and the
expansion tank. This gives the coolant pump a constant overpressure and thus reduces the
risk of cavitation damage.

The cab heater heat exchanger (10) uses the heat in the coolant return for heating.
If the vehicle is fitted with a WTA 6kW (17), which is an engine/cab heater, the flow
varies according to the active WTA setting. For more information, see the link to WTA2
Auxiliary heater - water – Function.
If instead the vehicle is installed with a WTA 3kW (17), the coolant is only used to heat
the cab, and not the engine.
Another installation with which the vehicle may be equipped is the SSH (short stop
heater, which is a circulation pump that uses the excess heat remaining once the engine
has been switched off.
A warning lamp comes on when the coolant level is too low or when the coolant
temperature is too high. There will also be torque reduction in the engine if the coolant
temperature gets too high, as a safety measure.
