My COT

This document outlines a science lesson plan on genetic engineering for 12th grade STEM students. The lesson plan has the following objectives: compare classical breeding to genetic engineering techniques; enumerate the steps in molecular cloning; describe methods to introduce DNA into cells; and explain how genetically modified organisms are selected and screened. The lesson involves motivating students with questions, discussing the topic with videos, grouping students to present on genetic engineering in different formats, and evaluating students with multiple choice questions. The goal is for students to understand the steps involved in genetic engineering.

Teaching Demonstration in Science

(Third Quarter Lesson)

Topic/Title: GENETIC ENGINEERING

Grade Level: STEM 12
Time Allotment: 1 HOUR
Teacher: MERRY ANNE S. GO

Learning Competencies and Objectives:

Learning Competency:
The learners should be able to outline the steps involved in genetic engineering.

Code: STEM_BIO11/12-IIIa-b-6

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
• compare classical breeding with modern genetic engineering techniques;
• enumerate the steps in molecular cloning;
• describe some methods to introduce DNA into cells; and
• explain the selection and screening of transformants / genetically modified organisms (GMOs)

Integrated Subjects:
English, Aral. Pan., ESP, Ed. Tech.

Procedure:
Preparatory Learning Activities
- Prayer
- Greeting
- Checking of attendance
- Introduce the lesson of the day
Motivation:

(Ellicit)
Ask the learners
- What is DNA?
- What is DNA Replication?
- Why is it that DNA is known as having semiconservative strands?
- What are the base pairing used in the DNA Replication?
(Engage/Motivation)
- Flash pictures and ask students what they see.
- Ask students to choose which pictures are real and which are not, and Why?
- Ask a volunteer to guess the topic through guessing the longest word from the jumbled
letters shown for additional points. (Introduce the new lesson)

Flash on the screen the objectives and ask learner/s to read the objectives.
Word board (Vocabulary)

(English integration)
(Explore)
- Ask for volunteers to enumerate plants and animals that have desirable or enhanced traits.
- Ask learners to explain how each of the traits was introduced or developed (i.e. classical
breeding or recombinant DNA technology).
- Discuss the lesson with the active participation of the learners (with video presentation).
(History, English and ESP Integration).
(Experience)
- Group Performance (Differentiated Instructions)
- Students will be grouped into 5. Each group will present their understanding in different
ways from the discussion.
- Each group will choose from the given different types of activity for their presentation.
(MAPEH, ENGLISH Integration)
o Infomercial
o Singing
o Poem
o Poster making/drawing
o Talk show
- Present the rubrics in rating the learner’s performances.
1. Each group will be given 15 minutes only to do the task and maximum of 3
minutes presentation.
2. Process the result of the presentation using rubrics.
(Elaborate)
- Correct any misconceptions given from each group’s presentation.
- Discuss/elaborate on the related topics not clearly presented.

(Evaluation)

a. cutting b. pasting c. controlling d. sequencing

_______ 4. If there is a direct modification in an organism’s genome, (which is the list of specific
traits), in order to give that desirable traits to different organism/s, what is the term used for the
organism that will receive the desirable traits?
