Violent video games really have bad impacts. They may contribute to youth violence.
Increasing reports of bullying can be partially attributed to the popularity of violent video
games. The 2008 study Grand Theft Childhood reported that 60% of middle shhool boys who played
at least one mature-rated game hit or beat up someone, compared to 39% of boys that did not play
mature-rated games.
Violent video games desensitize players to real-life violence. It is common for victims in
video games to disappear off screen when they are killed or for players to have multiple lives. The
games might teach youth that violence is an acceptable conflict-solving strategy and an appropriate
way to achieve one`s goals. A 2009 study found that youth who play violent video games have lower
belief in the use of nonviolent strategies and are less forgiving than players of nonviolent video
games.
Violent video games cause players to associate pleasure and happiness with the ability to
cause pain in others. Young children are more likelyto confuse fantasy violence with real word
violence, and without a framework for ethical decision making, they may mimic the actions they see
in violent video games.
Playing violent video games increases aggressive behaviour and arousal. A 2009 study found
that it takes up to four minutes for the level of aggressive thoughts and feelings in children to return
to normal after playing violent video games. It takes five to ten minutes for heart rate and aggressive
behaviour to return to baseline. Video games that show the mosth blood generate more aggressive
thoughts. When blood is present in video games, there is a measurable increase in arousal and
hostility.
From the facts mentioned above, it is clear that violent video games really contribute to the
youth violence.

3. Which of the following statements is the writer`s argument?

B. Teach children how to solve their problems quickly
C. Confuse children between fantasy and real word violence
D. Are imitated by children by acting like the games’s characters
E. Encourage the players to feel amused as well as couragaous

5. “Playing violent video games increases aggressive behaviour and arousal.” (Paragraph 5) The
underlined word can be best replaced with ....
A. Hurting
B. Explosive
C. Dangerous
D. Contentious
E. Unpredictable

drop at night-significantly increasing their risk of a heart attack. Meanwhile, only 14,2 % of people
who ate their dinners earlier had this problem.

Hi, Rifky.
How are you? I just want you to know that my holiday in Padang was really wonderful.
Padang is a really great place. The people are kind and friendly. The food is great. I enjoyed
the satay and es durian very much. You know, when I told this to my sister Vinny, she
wanted to taste them.

However, the weather was just like home, very hot in the afternoon. It was a bit annoying.
Rifky, it was amazing to see Rumah Gadang in Padang, the original place. Besides, the city
was clean and the road users were disciplined. Chatting at night on Siti Nurbaya Bridge while
enjoying grilled corn was another marvelous experience. I just thought, the bridge stands
alone during the day, but it has lots of friends at night. I want to go to Padang again next
time.
Well, that’s enough for now. Please pass my warm greetings to your parents. I look forward
to hearing from you.

Cheers,
Devito

Similar to Thailand, the newspaper business in Indonesia faces stagnation while online
news portals enjoy healthy growth as they cash in on increasing penetration of mobile
Internet users. The most popular categories are involved with constructive news such as
science, technology and business.
“Because an online newspaper needs different strategies to build advertisers’ confidence,
it should not be treated as a bonus to mainstream media,” said Karaniya Dharmasaputra, the
founder and chief executive officer of Viva Media Baru, the operator of Vivanews.com., one
of the biggest online news portals in Indonesia.
It is estimated that there are at least 55 million Internet users among Indonesia’s
population of more than 200 million. “38 per cent of that number were mobile Internet users.
Though 90 per cent of total income comes from advertisements, reader-centric content
remains our strong selling point,” Dharmasaputra added.

with the cloth and clean water. Do not neglect cleaning the door.

ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in
motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal
disturbances. Many people with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math and art.
Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development. However, the most obvious
signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age.
Not long ago, the answer to the question “What causes autism?” would have been “we have no
idea”. Research is now delivering the answers. First and foremost, we now know that there is no
one cause of autism just as there is no one type of autism. Over the last five years, scientists have
identified a number of rare gene changes, or mutations, associated with autism. A small number
of these are sufficient to cause autism by themselves. Most cases of autism, however, appear to be
caused by a combination of autism risk genes and environmental factors influencing early brain
development.
In the presence of a genetic predisposition to autism, a number of non-genetic, or
“environmental”, stresses appear to further increase a child’s risk. The clearest evidence of these
autism risk factors involves events before and during birth. They include advanced parental age at
time of conception (both mom and dad), maternal illness during pregnancy and certain difficulties
during birth, particularly those involving periods of oxygen deprivation to the baby’s brain. It is
important to keep in mind that these factors, by themselves, do not cause autism. Rather, in
combination with genetic risk factors, they appear to modestly increase risk.
A growing body of research suggests that a woman can reduce her risk of having a child with
autism by taking prenatal vitamins containing folic acid and/or eating a diet rich in folic acid (at
least 600 mcg a day) during the months before and after conception.

The Global Positioning System is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a

network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally
intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for
civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There
are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS.
GPS satellites circle the earth twice a day in a very precise orbit and transmit signal
information to earth. GPS receivers take this information and use triangulation to calculate the
user’s exact location. Essentially, the GPS receiver compares the time a signal was transmitted by
a satellite with the time it was received. The time difference tells the GPS receiver how far away
the satellite is. Now, with distance measurements from a few more satellites, the receiver can
determine the user’s position and display it on the unit’s electronic map.
A GPS receiver must be locked on to the signal of at least three satellites to calculate a
2D position (latitude and longitude) and track movement. With four or more satellites in view, the
receiver can determine the user’s 3D position (latitude, longitude and altitude). Once the user’s
position has been determined, the GPS unit can calculate other information, such as speed,
bearing, track, trip distance, distance to destination, sunrise and sunset time and more.
Today’s GPS receivers are extremely accurate, thanks to their parallel multi-channel
design. Garmin’s 12 parallel channel receivers are quick to lock onto satellites when first turned
on and they maintain strong locks, even in dense foliage or urban settings with tall buildings.
Certain atmospheric factors and other sources of error can affect the accuracy of GPS receivers.
Garmin® GPS receivers are accurate to within 15 meters on average.

Text 1
Fast food nowadays is considered a normal eating venture. People are not just eating
out on special weekend occasions anymore. It means that all the time they mostly eat fast
foods. However, is fast food good for health?
Fast food has its popularity in the 1940s. Within a few years, fast-food operations
popped up everywhere. With the compelling rise in fast-food restaurants since the 1940s,
oddly it started the rise in obesity and cancer during that same time period.
Moreover, fast food is highly processed with a large array of additives. To ensure fast
food’s low cost, the fast food products are made with highly-processed ingredients to give it
shelf-life, to hold consistency and to enhance flavor. Fast food is altered from its original
healthy form.
Finally, it is not the calories in fast food which damage health and waistline. It is the
chemical additives such as aspartame and MSG (monosodium glutamate). Studies show that
the chemical additives lead to weight and disease issues.
So, there is absolutely nothing nutritional about fast food. Fast food simply feeds
hunger and craving.

1. Why is fast food harmful for our health?

a. Because it decreases obesity and cancer.
b. Because it contains calories.
c. Because it maintains its original healthy form.
d. Because it uses chemical additives to enhance flavor.
e. Because it is cheap and delicious.
Key answer: D

2. What can we infer from the text?

a. Fast food is worth eating.
b. Fast food has some nutrition.
c. Fast food is famous for years.
d. Fast food is produced with low processed ingredients.
e. Fast food has its original healthy form
Key answer: C

3. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?

a. The chemical additives in fast food are dangerous.
b. A research that shows the impact of chemical additives in fast food.
c. The calories in fast food which destroy health and waistline.
d. Fast food contains some chemical additives.
e. The chemical additives and calories can increase weight.

English language, just like the other languages, also has several accents. These accents
vary from one English speaking country to another.
If you live in a country where English is spoken widely, but it is not the native language,
you will have an accent that is easily recognized by people in native English countries. For
example, if you live in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, etc., your accent may be
mild or virtually incomprehensible to people in the UK, USA, or Canada. It is in your best
interest to listen to native speakers of western countries and try to imitate their accent.
American TV and radio stations often hire Canadians as news readers and announcers
because the Canadian accents tend to be more flat and more easily understood by practically
everyone. American accents tend to be regionally distinctive.
When imitating native English speakers, be wary of people who live in New Zealand
(they mangle the vowels), Australian (their English is full of low-class Cockney slang), South
Africa (Dutch-flavored English), the southern USA (strong drawls), certain eastern states of
the USA (North Carolina, Tennessee in particular have very strong drawls, sometimes
incomprehensible to others), Newfoundland (very strong accent, different vocabulary). Drawl
is a way of speaking that drags out the word, changing the vowels, such as ‘oil’ becomes
‘ahl’ and ‘five’ becomes ‘faaav’.
1. The text is mainly about____.
a. American accent
b. Australian accent
c. English accent
d. Native English countries
e. Native English speakers
Key answer: C
2. Why do many news readers and announcers in America televisions and radio stations
come from Canada?
a. Because their accents tend to be regionally distinctive.
b. Because everyone has difficulty to understand their accent.
c. Because they have very strong accent and different to others.
d. Because everyone can listen to and imitate their accent easily.
e. Because their accents is more flat and more easily understood by most people.
Key answer: E

3. What area has a very strong drawl?

a. Newfoundland
b. South Africa
c. South Carolina
d. Tennessee
e. the southern USA

Exercise is an essential part of good health. By exercising, we can get many benefits.
First, exercise makes us strong by increasing the size and strength of our muscles.
Without it the muscles waste away.
Moreover, it can strengthen our heart. As a result, our heart can pump blood more
efficiently. This means it can do more work with less effort. Just running for a bus can strain
an unfit person’s heart.
Exercise also makes us breathe deeper and takes in more oxygen. It is very important
because the food we eat must be combined with oxygen inside our bodies before it can give
us energy.
It improves our circulation by making our blood vessels more elastic and opening up new
channels. This means that food and oxygen, which are carried in our blood, get around our
bodies more efficiently.
Exercise also improves our speed of reaction and coordination by making our brains and
nervous systems work more efficiently. It also helps us to move more gracefully.
Finally, it helps us relax and overcome stress. We feel generally healthier and happier.

Queen Aji Bidara Putih

was a kingdom ruled by Queen Aji Bidara Putih. She was a typical queen of myths:

One day, a Chinese boat came to eastern Borneo. First, the people thought it was a
merchant ship but the boat was loaded with trade goods and highly trained soldiers. Their
envoys brought gold and porcelain to announce the marriage proposal from a prince of
China. The queen didn’t refuse instantly and replied that she had to ponder the proposal
first. After the envoys left the palace, the queen called a court officer and ordered him to
infiltrate the Chinese boat to gather information on the prince.
When night fell, the officer sneaked onto the boat, got by all the guards, and finally
found the prince’s room. The large door would not open and he couldn’t find a peek hole,
so the officer put his ear to the wall, trying to catch sounds from inside. He heard that the
prince was having his dinner and the noise of his chewing and slurping surprised the
officer. It was like a boar that he had once heard when he was hunting. He quickly left the
boat and returned to the palace. He reported that the prince must have been a phantom, not
a human. He believed that the phantom could be in a human’s form only during the
daytime. The queen was so surprised and got angry.
On the next day, she refused his proposal. The enraged prince ordered his troops to
raid Muara Kaman. The battle was won by the prince’s huge band of troops. As they drew
near to the palace, Queen Aji Bidara Putih chewed a leaf of betel vine and sang a mantra
while holding it. When she threw it at the Chinese troops, it turned to giant centipedes. The
Chinese troops started to retreat but three centipedes chased them and sank the boat. The
site of the sunken ship is now known as Danau Lipan (Lake of Centipedes), with Chinese
treasures hidden on the lake’s bed.

The White Butterfly

An old man named Takahama lived in a little house behind the cemetery of the temple
of Sozanji. He was extremely friendly and generally liked by his neighbors, though most of
them considered him a little mad. That was because he was very old but he did not want to
get married. He did not have the desire for intimate relationship with women.
One summer day he became very ill, so ill, in fact, that he sent for his sister-in-law and
her son. They both came and did all they could to bring comfort during his last hours.
While Takahama fell asleep, they watched a large white butterfly flew into the room and
rested on the old man’s pillow. The young man tried to drive it away with a fan; but it came
back three times, as if it was very loath to leave the sufferer.
At last Takahama’s nephew chased it out into the garden, through the gate, and into the
cemetery beyond, where it lingered over a woman’s tomb, and then mysteriously
disappeared. On examining the tomb, the young man found the name “Akiko” written upon
it, together with a description narrating how Akiko died when she was eighteen. Though the
tomb was covered with moss and must have been erected fifty years previously, the boy
saw that it was surrounded with flowers, and that the little water tank had been recently
filled.
When the young man returned to the house he found that Takahama had passed away,
and he returned to his mother and told her what he had seen in the cemetery. “Akiko?”
murmured his mother. “When your uncle was young he was betrothed to Akiko. She died
shortly before her wedding day. When Akiko left this world, your uncle resolved never to
marry, and to live ever near her grave.
For all these years, he has remained faithful to his vow, and kept in his heart all the
sweet memories of his one and only love. Every day Takahama went to the cemetery,
whether the air was fragrant with summer breeze or thick with falling snow. Every day he
went to her grave and prayed for her happiness, swept the tomb and set flowers there. When
Takahama was dying, and he could no longer perform his loving task, Akiko came for him.
That white butterfly was her sweet and loving soul.”

Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck is one of Indonesian movie released in 2013 on
the theme of love and cultural conflict in 1930’s. The story begins when a young man of
Minang descent who lives and grows in Makassar, Zainuddin (Herjunot Ali) go to Batipuh,
Tanah Datar, West Sumatra, in order to know the birthplace of his father and deepen his
religious knowledge. Zainuddin’s arrival was not well received by the villagers because of
the history of the Zainuddin’s descendant─whose father comes from Minang marry his
mother who comes from Bugis. At that time, the structure of Minang people manages the
ancestry from maternal lineage. However, Zainuddin strengthens his heart to remain in
Batipuh, especially when he met a beautiful girl named Hayati (Pevita Pearce). After that,
they fall in love and Zainuddin’s descendant was again being the obstacle of their romance.
Zainuddin was forced to leave Batipuh because their relationship deemed unfit. However,
Zainuddin and Hayati promised to love each other.

The problems get bigger when Hayati proposed by a wealthy man of pure Minang
descent, Aziz (Reza Rahadian). Forced by her family, Hayati accepts the proposal and breaks
her relationship with Zainuddin. Zainuddin chooses to leave Minang island and ventured to
Java island after his heart had been broken by Hayati. With his talent as a writer, Zainuddin
managed to gain fame as well as material happiness. Meanwhile, the destiny between
Zainuddin and Hayati did not necessarily stop. Inadvertently, Zainuddin again met with
Hayati who has now become the wife of Aziz. As might be expected, their turbulent love then
started burning again.

This movie is remarkable because each part of the story is described so smoothly. The
characters of this movie successfully deliver a deep emotion to the audience. As usual, Reza
Rahadian plays impeccably. When Herjunot Ali and Pearce Pevita still seen trying hard to
turn their character, Reza Rahadian appears so easy in the figure of Aziz. Pevita Pearce also
successfully demonstrated with good acting skills. Although the character of Hayati still feels
not so ripe, Pevita capable of displaying the figure of the girl who lived in the 1930’s with the
problem of conflict between tradition and her romance with a performance that will be able
heartbreaking. However, the strongest performance in Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck
clearly comes from Herjunot Ali. Herjunot managed to give a pretty deep emotional touch to
his character, reciting poetic dialogues given to his character well and makes the character
Zainuddin was so easy to get the sympathy from the audience. Other acting appearances were
quite a surprise present from Randy Nidji who recently made his acting debut through, but
managed to give the appearance that is so convincing.

I recommend this movie because of its epic classy romance which is so hard to find in
Indonesian’s movie in recent years. I give four stars to this movie. You have to watch this!

Rainbow Warrior

This is a movie adapted from a best-selling Indonesian novel. It took 40 days of filming on

Novel in every corner of the nation’s bookshops and media review pages. It has finally overcome the
domination of teen-lit, chick-lit and even religious novels, the popular theme of today.

Andrea entrusted the filming of the story to the respected figures in the film industry, Mira

ESSAY- DISCUSSION TEXT

Should performance enhancing drugs be accepted in sports?

The issues of using drugs to enhance athlete’s performance is controversial. Those
who agree to the use of drugs in enhancing performance say that most top players in all
sports take drugs to train harder and feel no pain during the play. The trainer, sport doctors,
nutritionists, psychotherapists, and managers of the big names make sure banned substances
are taken at the safest and most efficient levels. The main effect of banning such substances
has turned performers and their coaches into liars and cheaters.
On the other hand, some still believe that performance enhancing drugs in sport
should be banned. Performance enhancing drugs are not only prohibited because they
violate the spirit of sport but also because they can damage the health of athletes.
I think the idea of allowing them in sports could lead to a situation whereby
sportsmen and women are used as human guinea pigs for a constant flow of new,
unregulated substances.

1. What argument is given by those who disagree with the use of performance enhancing
drugs?
2. According to the proponents of the performance enhancing drugs, the effect of banning
them is that performers become_________
3. What is the writer’s intention to write the text?

Kunci Jawaban
1.Athletes health is badly affected.
2. Cheaters
To expose readers with the issue.

Text 2
There are a lot of discussions as to whether children should be given homework or
not.
Some people claim that children do enough work in school already. They also argue
that children have hobbies that they want to do after school, such as sports or music. A
further point they make is that a lot of home work is pointless and doesn’t help the child learn
at all.
However, there are also strong arguments against this point of view. Parents and
teachers argue that it is important to find out whether children can work on their own without
support from the teacher. They say that the evening is a good time for children to sit down
and think about what they have learned in school.
Furthermore they claim that the school day is too short to get anything done that
needs doing and it makes sense to send home tasks like independent reading or further
writing tasks that don’t need teacher’s support.
On balance, I think that some homework is a good idea but that it should only be given at the
weekend when children have more time.

1. Those who are pro homework think that the students can _____ in the evening.
2. “A further point they make is that a lot of homework is pointless and doesn’t help the
child learn at all”. (Paragraph 2). The underlined word is synonymous with __
3. What is the writer’s suggestion about homework?

Kunci Jawaban
