Practice 2

This document contains practice problems involving group theory concepts such as proving properties of groups of even order, cyclic and abelian groups, normal subgroups, direct products, and automorphism groups. There are 15 multi-part problems covering topics like the structure of groups of certain orders, properties of homomorphisms and quotient groups, and the centers of groups.

Algebra I: Practice Sheet 2

1. Prove that if G is a group of even order then it contains an element of order 2.

2. Prove that if a group contains exactly one element of order 2, then that element is in the
center of the group.
3. Let φ : G −→ G0 be a surjective homomorphism.
(a) Assume G is cyclic. Show that G0 is also cyclic.
(b) Assume G is abelian. Show that G0 is also abelian.

4. Let φ : G −→ G0 be a surjective homomorphism, and let N be a normal subgroup of G.

Prove that φ(N ) is also a normal subgroup of G0 .
5. Prove that a group of order 30 can have atmost 7 subgroups of order 5.

10. Let G be a group containing normal subgroups of orders 3 and 5 respectively. Prove that
G contains an element of order 15. Can you generalize this fact?
11. Let G be a group of order n, where n = ab for some integers a and b. Let H, K be
subgroups of G, of orders a and b respectively, such that H ∩ K = {e}. Prove that
HK = G. Is G isomorphic to H × K?

12. Identify the quotient group R× /P , where P denotes the subgroup of positive real numbers.
13. Consider H = {1, −1, i, −i} as a subgroup of G = C× . Describe the cosets of H in G,
and prove that G/H ∼
