Quadratic Function Using: Table of Values, Graph and Equation, First Edition, 2020
What is a Function?
Function is a relation wherein every element of the domain corresponds with exactly one element of the range. The domain
of a function is the possible values of x. The range refers to the possible values of y.

What is a Quadratic Function?

Quadratic function is a function in the form y = ax2+ bx + c where a, b and c are real number and a should not be equal to 0
(a≠0). The highest exponent of the independent variable of a quadratic function is 2.
In a quadratic equation, ax2 = quadratic form, bx = linear form, and c = constant. ax2 should not be equal to zero(0),
otherwise it makes the given function looks linear.

Deped Mathematics - Grade 9, Alternative Delivery Mode, Quarter I – Module 9: Quadratic Functions,
First Edition, 2020
I. Concept Note

The graph of a quadratic function is called a parabola. It is the set of all points on the Cartesian Coordinate Plane that
satisfies the function defined by or the vertex form f(x) = a(x – h) 2 + k where (h, k) is the vertex.
Example 1: graph the function where y = x2 +4x + 3
Solution
Steps
Step 1 : determine the vertex (h, k) h= -2 and k = -1 thus vertex (h.k) = (-2,-1)

Step 2: construct a table of values and place the vertex in the

center

Step 3: Assign the values of x before and after -2.

If x = -4
y = x2 +4x + 3
y = (-4)2 + 4(-4) + 3
y = 16 – 16 + 3
Step 4: Solve for y using the values of x.
y=3
Follow this procedure when the vales of x are -3, -1 and 0 and
complete the table of values.

x -4 -3 -2 -1 0
y 3 0 -1 0 3
Step 5: Fill in the table with the computed values of y in terms
of x.

Step 6: Fill in the table with the computed values of y in terms

of x.

Example 2: Consider the graph of the quadratic function g, given by y= - x2 +1. Determine its domain and
range.
Solution
Steps
Step 1 : determine the vertex (h, k) h= -2 and k = -1 thus vertex (h.k) = (0,1)

Step 2: construct a table of values and place the vertex in the

center

Step 3: Assign the values of x before and after 0.

If x = -2
y = -x2 + 1
y = -(-2)2 + 1 1
Step 4: Solve for y using the values of x. y = -4 + 1
y = -3
Follow this procedure when the vales of x are -1, 1 and 2 and
complete the table of values.

x -2 -1 -0 1 2
y -3 0 1 0 -3
Step 5: Fill in the table with the computed values of y in terms
of x.

Step 6: Fill in the table with the computed values of y in terms

of x.
The x-intercept of a graph is the value of x at which the graph intersects the x-axis. That is, if the graph passes
through the point (a,0), then the graph has an x-intercept of a. (In other words, the value/s of x when y=0).

The y-intercept of a graph is the value of y at which the graph intersects the y-axis. Thus, if the graph passes
through the point (0,b), then the graph has a y-intercept of b. (In other words, the value of y when x=0).

The vertex is the highest or lowest point of the parabola. The axis of symmetry is an imaginary line passing
through the vertex, which divides the parabola into two identical parts.

The minimum value is the y coordinate of the vertex of the parabola when it opens upward or when a >0.

The maximum value is the y coordinate of the vertex of the parabola when it opens downward or when a < 0.

CULMINATING PERFORMANCE TASK

Goal: to formulate challenging situation in community involving quadratic equations, inequalities or
functions, and rational algebraic equations and solve them using a variety of strategies.
Role: Business Agent
Audience: Manager
Situation:
You are an MCSS Online shop business agent. You are tasked to make a report to maximize the revenue.

Products: You are about to present a written report of your proposal to your Manager.
Your report proposal should include the following;
 Formulated problem
 Write the equation of revenue function
 Find how much is the maximum sale?
 What price per item produces maximum revenue?
 How many number of items needed to sell that produces maximum revenue
 Recommendations

Standards: The proposal should demonstrate practicality, accuracy,

Authenticity and application of concepts on quadratic functions

Example Performance Task:

Apply the concept of quadratic function to solve the following problem. Show your solution.

Formulated Problem:
Due to the existing situation brought by the pandemic COVID-19, the frontliners are required to wear PPEs. A
company of PPEs sells 600 pcs at Php1, 000.00 each per week. The company estimates that they can sell 80 pcs more
PPEs for each Php100.00 decrease in price.

a. Write an equation for the revenue function.

R(x)= (600 + 80x) (1000 – 100x)
R(x) =600,000 -60000x + 80,000x – 8000x2
R(x) = -8000x2 +20,000x +600,000, is the model of the revenue from the sales

b. How much is the maximum sale?

R(x) = -8000 (x – 5/4)2 + 587, 500

The vertex is (5/4, 587,500)

Thus the maximum revenue is Php 587,500

c. What price of PPE’s produces maximum revenue?

The price of the cap to produce maximum revenue can be determined by
P(x) = (1000 – 100x)
P(x) = 1000 – 100(5/4)
P(x) = 1000 – 125
P(x) = 875
Thus, Php875 is the price of the PPE’s that produces maximum revenue.
d. How many PPEs needed to sell per week?
Q(x) = (600 + 80x)
Q(x) = 600 + 80(5/4)
Q(X) = 600 + 100
Q(x) = 700
Thus, 700pcs of PPE’s is needed to sell per week that produces maximum revenue.

RECCOMENDATION TO YOUR MANAGER:

Based to the result of analysis in order to attain the maximum revenue the store needs to sell 700pcs PPE’s per week at a
price of Php875.00.
