Deped Math- Grade 9Alternative Delivery Mode, Quarter 1, Wk.6 - Module 2: Solving Quadratic
Inequalities First Edition, 2020
This module is all about quadratic inequalities and their solution sets and graphs. It provides opportunities to the learners to
describe quadratic inequalities and their solution sets using practical situations, mathematical expressions and their graphs.
Quadratic Inequality is an equality that contains a polynomial of degree 2 and can be written with the symbols > , < , ≥ or ≤.
Examples: 1. x2 + x -12 0 3. 5 ≥ x2 − x
2. 7x2 -28 < 0 4. 2y2 + 1 ≤ 7y
Quadratic inequalities can be solved using
1. Three Test Points (one variable)
2. Graphing (in two variables).
The solution set of quadratic inequalities in two variables can be determined graphically. To do this, write the
inequality as an equation, then show the graph.
Take note of the image of the following graphs for each quadratic inequality.

Quadratic Function Using: Table of Values, Graph and Equation, First Edition, 2020
What is a Function?
Function is a relation wherein every element of the domain corresponds with exactly one element of the range. The domain
of a function is the possible values of x. The range refers to the possible values of y.
1. y = 2x2
2. y = 4x2– 1

I. Concept Note
The vertex form y = a(x – h) 2 + k is essential to know the vertex form because this is suitable to use when working with
problems involving vertex and graph of a quadratic function, which will be discussed in the next module. Below are more examples of
transforming standard form of quadratic function into vertex form and vice versa.

Deped Mathematics - Grade 9, Alternative Delivery Mode, Quarter I – Module 9: Quadratic Functions,
First Edition, 2020
I. Concept Note
The graph of a quadratic function is called a parabola. It is the set of all points on the Cartesian Coordinate Plane that
satisfies the function defined by or the vertex form f(x) = a(x – h) 2 + k where (h, k) is the vertex.
Example 1: graph the function where y = x2 +4x + 3
Solution
Steps
Step 1 : determine the vertex (h, k) h= -2 and k = -1 thus vertex (h.k) = (-2,-1)
If x = -4
y = x2 +4x + 3
y = (-4)2 + 4(-4) + 3
y = 16 – 16 + 3
Step 4: Solve for y using the values of x.
y=3
Follow this procedure when the vales of x are -3, -1 and 0 and
complete the table of values.
x -4 -3 -2 -1 0
y 3 0 -1 0 3
Step 5: Fill in the table with the computed values of y in terms
of x.
Example 2: Consider the graph of the quadratic function g, given by y= - x2 +1. Determine its domain and
range.
Solution
Steps
Step 1 : determine the vertex (h, k) h= -2 and k = -1 thus vertex (h.k) = (0,1)
If x = -2
y = -x2 + 1
y = -(-2)2 + 1 1
Step 4: Solve for y using the values of x. y = -4 + 1
y = -3
Follow this procedure when the vales of x are -1, 1 and 2 and
complete the table of values.
x -2 -1 -0 1 2
y -3 0 1 0 -3
Step 5: Fill in the table with the computed values of y in terms
of x.
The y-intercept of a graph is the value of y at which the graph intersects the y-axis. Thus, if the graph passes
through the point (0,b), then the graph has a y-intercept of b. (In other words, the value of y when x=0).
The vertex is the highest or lowest point of the parabola. The axis of symmetry is an imaginary line passing
through the vertex, which divides the parabola into two identical parts.
The minimum value is the y coordinate of the vertex of the parabola when it opens upward or when a >0.
The maximum value is the y coordinate of the vertex of the parabola when it opens downward or when a < 0.
1. y = x2 +2x - 8
2. y = - x2 + 2

function, First Edition, 2020
In this activity you will be able to determine the equation of a quadratic function given: a) table of values; b.)
graph; c.) zeros and solve problems involving quadratic functions.
A table of values is a list of numbers that can be generated from a quadratic function, where the given values of x are
substituted to the function to solve for the f(x). The values of y depend on the given values of x. X values are called the domain of the
function or the first coordinate of an ordered pair (x, y) and the y values are the range of the function or the second coordinate of an
ordered pair (x,y).
