The Mothership

A mother and son have a conversation in their kitchen where the son learns some difficult truths. The son does not want to leave his mother, but she explains that with the world in the state it is, there is no place for him there anymore. When the son asks for a hug goodbye, the mother reveals that she is not actually human - she is an artificial intelligence created by a mothership to teach the son about human emotions. They both disappear as the kitchen evaporates, with the AI mother affirming she will always be watching over her son.

FADE IN:

INT. A SPACIOUS KITCHEN - DAY

A woman drinks her morning coffee. Her son approaches her

table.

SON
Good morning.

MOTHER
Morning.

A beat.

MOTHER
OK. What have you learned?

The son folds his hands.

MOTHER
What time is it?

SON
It's half-past eleven.

The mother nods.

SON
I'm not gonna go.

MOTHER
Why?

SON
Why?!

The mother folds her hands under the table.

MOTHER
Tell me.

The son sighs, looks up from his folded hands to his

mother's face.

SON
I love you.

The mother drinks from her empty coffee cup.

MOTHER
I know that. I love you, too.
2.

SON
We can still go to the shelter,
uncle Bob said...

MOTHER
His transport broke down during
the last wave. Bob is dead.

The son is stunned. He starts to weep. The mother gets up

from her chair, goes over to her son's side, and puts her
hand on top of his head.

MOTHER
We knew this day would come.

The son fights his urge to escape, somehow.

MOTHER (CONT'D)
There's no place left for you
here.

The son detects a trace of tenderness in the mother's

voice. He turns to look at her who now has her usual
neutral face.

A beat.

SON
Can I hug you?

MOTHER
Thank you for asking first. No.
You know the rules.

SON
But if I go...

MOTHER
I will always be with you.

The son stands up abruptly. The mother steps back to avoid

contact.

SON
You will only be watching, won't
you?

The mother folds her hands in front of her, and nods.

SON
I want to be with you.

MOTHER
It's the only way forward.
3.

SON
Ok, but I want to feel something
real, I want to take off this
suit, I want to hug you one last
time.

The mother shakes her head, looks down, stands still. The
son reaches out to touch her. He stumbles into empty air.

MOTHER
I'm sorry, my son. This is the
only way.

The son slowly realizes. He sinks to his knees and sobs.

(A beat)
And remember, your mother will
always be watching.

The Kitchen evaporates. The son remains.

FADE OUT.
