Explanation of answers

1. a. He asked me if they had eaten out together the day before.

Direct speech berupa kalimat yes no question dengan time reference


“yesterday”. Time reference perlu diubah menjadi “the day before” atau” the
previous day”.

2. b. He told me not to turn off the light at that time.

Verb menjadi kalimat infinitives dalam bahasa inggris pada reporting


commands (perintah).

3. b. She wanted to know what my passion was.

Direct speech berupa kalimat wh-questions (information request) –> pindahkan


verb ke belakang subject

4. a. He said that he began to understand the concept of Biodiversity.

Direct speech berupa statement (pernyataan) dengan verb kalimat simple


present tense. Verb diubah menjadi simple past tense (penyampai berita fokus
pada fakta bahwa pembicaraan merupakan past conversation).

5. c. He told me that my friend had just left.

Verb kalimat present perfect tense disesuaikan menjadi kalimat past perfect
tense.

6. b. She asked me whether she could borrow my pencil for a moment.

Kalimat modal auxiliary verbs bahasa inggris “can” (present) disesuakan


menjadi “could” (past).

7. c. He asked her why she was staring at his feet.


Verb kalimat present continuous tense pada direct speech menjadi kalimat past
continuous tense pada reported speech.

8. c. He said that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

Verb tidak berubah (menjadi past) karena pernyataan berupa general truth.

9. a. She said she was going to meet her penpal for the first time the next
day.

Time reference “tomorrow” disesuaikan menjadi “the next day” atau “the
following day”.

10. a. They said they had been there for a week.

“Here” pada direct speech diubah menjadi “there”.

1. “He works in a bank” (simple present)


She said that he worked in a bank. (simple past)

2. “We went out last night” (Simple past)


She told me that they had gone the night before. (Past Perfect)

3. “I’m coming!” (present continuous)


She said that she was coming. (Past Continuous)

4. “I was waiting for the bus when he arrived” (past continuous)


She told me that she had been waiting for the bus when he arrived. (Past perfect
continuous)

5. “I’d never been there before”. (present perfect)


She said that she had never been there before. (past perfect)

6. “I didn’t go to the party” (simple past)


She told me that she hadn't gone to the party.(past perfect)
7. “He hasn’t eaten breakfast” (simple past)
She told me that he hadn't eaten breakfast.(past perfect)

8. “I can help you tomorrow” (modal auxiliary verb “can” present)


She said that she could help me tomorrow. (“could” past)

9. “You should go to bed early” (modal auxiliary ver “should” present)


She told me that I should go to bed early. (“should” past)

10. “I visited my parents at the weekend” (simple past)


She told me that she had visited her parents at the weekend. (past perfect)
