- France has one of the world’s largest electricity producers “EDF” ( Electricite De France ). In
2003, they produced 22% of the European Union’s electricity power, mainly generated from
nuclear power.
- France is the third nation after USA and former USSR to launch its own space satellite. To
this day, they are still the biggest contributor to the European Space Agency.
2. CANADA
- One of the world’s rich repositories of minerals and other commodities.
- Has low corruption rates, well developed welfare system, government controlled health care.
- Canada’s more temperate climate and presence of natural resources helped Canada become
wealthy and managed to avoid problems that can hurt economic development.
3. GERMANY
- World’s third larger exporter of goods and largest national economy in Europe.
- The country which introduced the common European currency , Euro in 2002.
- Its automotive industry is regarded as one of the most competitive and innovative in the
world; also fourth largest in production. For example, BMW, Porsche, Audi,etc.
4. JAPAN
- Third largest economy in the world after USA and China. For example, its world famous car
brands like Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki ,etc.
- Fourth largest export market after China, USA, and Germany as it is a rich country which
produces high-technology and high quality products and industrial goods.
- It has excellent infrastructure which attracts many investors . For example, some of the fastest
trains in the world like the ‘Shinkansen’ bullet trains connect the large cities in the country.
5. SWITZERLAND
- One of the leaders in exports of high-end watches as well as clocks, knifes, etc.
- Has an extensive industrial sector, although not very well known all around the world, such
as: Nestle, Roche, Sika AG, etc.
- Has a high developed tourism infrastructure, especially in the mountainous regions, making
it a good market for tourism related services and equipment.
6. USA
- World’s largest national economy as a result of its high standard of living, wealth, and world
class services.
- The first man to land on the moon was Neil Armstrong from USA. This shows that USA has
been far advanced in their technology than most countries. Advancement in field of
technologies in factories and homes helped move USA into a more modernized country.
- Has a developed system of equity finance than countries in Europe and a decentralized
banking system that helps local entrepreneurs.
7. AUSTRALIA
- Established and well-built infrastructure; communications, infrastructure, and support
services.
- It is ranked as the world’s happiest nation among developed countries for three years, as a
result of its overall strength of its economy in the Better Life Index Organization.
- Excellent health care system, good education, the government can support all of its citizen.
8. ITALY
- Third largest national economy in Eurozone.
- Well known for its innovative business economic sector, an industrious and competitive
agricultural sector , automobile, fashion design , etc.
- Owns the world’s third largest gold reserve, and third net contributor to budget of European
Union.
9. UNITED KINGDOM
- Has the world’s fifth largest economy.
- Has a great power with stable economic, military, cultural, scientific, education and political
influence.
- Recognized as a nuclear weapons state and its military ranks fourth or fifth in the world.
UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRIES
1. CAMBODIA
- Among one of the poorest and underdeveloped countries in the world.
- Lack of working infrastructure and poor economic situation and management in the
country.
- The mass-murder of nearly 2 million people by the Khmer Rouge which is ¼ of the
population, caused a huge metal and spiritual deprivation.
2. MYANMAR
- The country’s underdevelopment is mainly due to the monopolies.
- According to the World Bank, nearly 37.5 % of the population is currently living in
poverty.
- Poor distribution of labor and has one of the lowest population in the region, since over
half of the population attribute agriculture as their main source of work.
3. ETHIOPIA
- One of the poorest countries in the world despite its fast economic growth.
- People living in the Ethiopia have less education and literacy rate, less money, lower life
expectancy rate, and higher fertility rate.
- Has a relatively low level of industrialization. Approximately 85% of its population is
employed in agriculture.
4. BANGLADESH
- One of the most corrupt countries in the world.
- An era of autocracy and hyprocrisy ruled over the country and lasted for 15 years.
- The educational system is below standards, employment system is too biased.
5. AFGHANISTAN
- The NHDR ranks Afghanistan as the poorest country in Asia, with a GDP per capita of
US$964.
- Almost half all Afghanistan children under five are underweight, as approx. 6.6 million
afghans do not meet the minimum food and water requirements and some die because of
starvation as a result of poverty.
- Many workers are illiterate and looking for low skilled jobs; they are poor due to lack of
natural resources.
6. BHUTAN
- Lack of infrastructure and small economy; one of the poorest countries in Asia.
- 47% of the population above the age of six is uneducated, as most children have to to
three hours to find a primary school.
- Is often struck by natural disasters due to its mountainous landscape. This makes it
impossible for any major infrastructural development to take place and causes an
increase in diseases like tuberculosis and malaria.
7. UGANDA
- According to the World Bank, Uganda has a low income, and it is among the Sub-
Saharan African developing countries.
- 28% of the population has unimproved drinking water sources and 66% has
unimproved sanitation facility access.
- Risk of infectious diseases are high, infant and maternal mortality rates are high and
HIV/AIDS is significant.
8. NEPAL
- Very less people have access to health care, education, clean drinking water and proper
sanitation services.
- 80% of the labor force still employed in agriculture.
- The cost of Living Index in Nepal is comparatively lower than many countries.
9. ZAMBIA
- Economic statistics from the UN show that 60% of Zambians live below the poverty line
and 42% are in extreme poverty.
- The country’s dependency on exporting mainly raw materials reduces the ability to
improve the country’s intellectual workforce.
- 64% of the population lives on less than $1 a day, 14% havw HIV/AIDS and have no
access to clean drinking water.
10. SOMALIA
- Failed leadership In the government; corruption, sell outs, vicious politicians.
- Experienced 2 decades of Civil War which hindered the development of the economy.
- Has a very low Human Development Index value of 0.285.
