Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
Lesson Idea Name: Addition and subtraction through a magnifying glass
Content Area/Grade(s): Kindergarten / Math
Content Standard Summarized: Students can differentiate between addition and subtraction.
Technology Standard Addressed: Students can show their knowledge by taking on the role of the teacher and
presenting content the creation of an audio book.
Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft Sway

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☒ Creating
Levels of Technology Integration:
☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.
☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. All products of learning are unique and
personalized. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator walking around monitoring the student-led
activity.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
Students will choose between addition and subtraction and then choose any method they understand
well and create a short audio book in groups covering this method of addition or subtraction. All
learners will be supported as they are working with peers for help, they are making something which
utilizes kinesthetic learning which younger students thrive with, and I have created a short addition
and subtraction audio book as an aide. As students have full creativity on the story line and how to
incorporate addition or subtraction into their books, they will be more engaged as they can bring in
their own personal sets of interests.
Lesson idea implementation:
As the teacher, I will show my students my audio book on addition and subtraction and we will work
through the provided problems in the book and solve them along with the book, pausing when
necessary. Then, I will explain to students that they will be creating their very own audio books in
groups on either addition or subtraction. They will utilize whichever method each group likes the best
and they have complete creative freedom in their addition or subtraction problems. I will discuss how
many touched on both addition and subtraction using cookies, but theirs will only touch on either
addition or subtraction and they can make it about whatever they like. I will walk students through
Microsoft Sway as well as walk around the room helping during the creation of their videos. At the
end of the lesson, students will share their videos with the class and we will work the problems out
together as each short video will only contain one addition or subtraction problem.

Reflective PracticeI feel that this activity will engage students in their learning and create a product that they
can go home and show their parents and therefore put time outside of school into. I believe that this lesson
will get students excited about the curriculum and step up to take on more of a teaching role. I think that
seeing videos they created just like the video I created will boost student’s confidence in their own abilities
and education. This lesson can be expanded upon in many ways as it is a simple one problem video. The next
day if we wanted, we could add to the videos or have students further their teaching role and watch and
critique one another’s videos and go through the editing process. Students will be excited about these and
excited to play them for whoever they see!
