1) Cesar Chavez wrote a magazine article ten years after Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination to explain the benefits of nonviolent resistance over violence. 2) Chavez appeals to emotions by stating that violence hurts people and destroys cities, while nonviolence can solve problems smoothly and gain widespread support. 3) Chavez also makes a logical argument that nonviolence is more effective than violence because it keeps opponents on the defensive and attracts more support over time.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a Civil Rights activist and Christian minister that led many

nonviolent marches during the Civil Rights movement from the 1940s to the 1960s. King

believed that nonviolence was always the better strategy when fighting injustice because of its

peaceful nature. Cesar Chavez wrote a magazine article ten years after Dr. King’s assassination

explaining the benefits of nonviolent resistance. By appealing to the audience’s emotions and

logical thinking, Chavez is able to get people to consider how nonviolence is always a better

solution than violence.

Chavez appeals to his audience’s emotions by stating powerful reasons why nonviolence

can get a problem solved more smoothly and often times in a calmer manner than violence.

Chavez explains that people suffer from violence and even “if it is temporarily successful” it is

just replacing “one violent form of power with another just as violent”(74). People often get hurt

and greatly suffer from violent protests and other violent action, which is something that nobody

wants. Chavez wants his audience to feel a sense of sorrow and sadness when thinking about

violence because of how destructive and hurtful it is to people. He wants people to learn from

past leaders such as Dr. King who used nonviolent methods and gained the support of thousands

of people. Chavez explains this concept in his article by saying that people can “gather the

support of millions” of people who would rather have a “nonviolent resolution to problems” than

a violent, destructive solution(25). Most people in the world would rather not have cities and

homes burned down and people killed to solve a problem. Nonviolence is a much calmer and

often more effective way to solve problems. People would rather join an organization that wants

to solve problems without violence than with violence because it will save multiple lives and

often entire cities. Chavez wants his readers to think about the consequences of violence and how

much it can hurt people. If people can feel a sense of sadness and hurt when they think about

violence they are more likely to choose nonviolent methods. Chavez is pushing nonviolent

methods for solving problems which is why he wants to make his audience feel sad and hurt

when they think of violence, so they are more likely to choose nonviolent methods in the future.

Chavez also makes his audience think logically about how nonviolence can be more

beneficial for problem solving than violence. If every problem in the world was solved with

violence, cities would be constantly destroyed and thousands of people would lose their lives for

no reason. Chavez tells his audience that “nonviolence is more powerful than violence” because

it “provides the opportunity to stay on the offensive(12). Staying on the offensive side of a

problem is important, because it means that there is never a time where the opponent can take

control. Violence, on the other hand, gives multiple opportunities for the opponent to take charge

because it is painful and it takes time to plan violent protests and events. This gets people to

logically think about how much easier and more effective nonviolence can be. People are more

likely to support nonviolence and Chavez explains that if for every “violent act committed

against us, we respond with nonviolence, we attract people’s support”(22). It is logical to most

people that violence is bad and it hurts a lot of people. Nonviolence is easier to achieve and it

saves a lot of lives and cities. Chavez uses logical reasons to get his audience thinking about

nonviolence resistance options. By thinking logically, Chavez is able to achieve his purpose of

pushing nonviolent resistance options.

Logic and emotion are two powerful tools that Chavez uses to push nonviolent problem

solving options. By emotionally connecting with his audience, Chavez is able to make his

audience feel sad and hurt when thinking about violence, which makes them want to use non-

violent methods instead. By thinking logically about how to solve a problem, Chavez is able to

push on his audience the idea of how nonviolence is a better solution than violence. Nonviolence

solves problems in a calmer and more organized manner that saves thousands of lives and large

cities. Chavez uses Martin Luther King Jr. as an example of how successful nonviolent protests

can be. The example gets people thinking about how nonviolence is a better way to solve

problems than using violence.
