Lesson 6- JOINING & FINISHING OPERATION
Introduction
In the metal Industry, Joining and Finishing is the probably the most important
part of the whole process of operation , the crucial part wherein the finished product
of your work will showcase its physical properties, aesthetically and functionally. This
process is sculptural by joining the components of a workpiece, usually a metal
materials producing a permanent joint between the parts to be assembled. The goal
here is that the joined parts should not be separated by any pressure or other forces.
Several techniques or methods of joining metals will be discussed in this module.
One is mechanical joining and others are the liquid-solid-state process or the
metallurgical joining.

Methods
1. soldering;
Soft soldering- a process of joining two or more pieces of similar or dissimilar
thinner parts by an alloy called ”solder”, which has a lower melting point than
the base metal. The temperature is approximately 300 C to 350 C.
Hard soldering- this process required an extra external heat which comes
from blow-lamp or oxy-acetylene flame to melt the solder. It is used for
underground cable-joint of telephone, electric etc.
2. brazing- is a kind of hard soldering. In this process , heat is applied from oxy-
acetylene flame at a greater heat . It produces a much stronger joint But it is a
temporary joint. It can be easily separated after heating of the welded metal.
3. brazing flux-This process utilize a chemical compound called “flux”. The role of the
flx here is to oxidize the or to dissolve the oxides from the metal which hinders the
process of welding because oxygen from oxides results to poor quality low strength
weld.
4. riveting- this is a mechanical type of joining two metal components. Rivets are
used to connect permanently two or more pieces of heavy section metal but it can
also be used to light gauge sheet.
5. welding- It is an industrial art of joining metals by pressure after heating to a
plastic state or joining two pieces of metals by fusion or by pressure to form a solid
union.
1. Solder- a metal alloy used as filler metal usually made of tin and lead which is
melted using a hot iron. The hot iron is heated to 600 C which then cools to create a
strong electrical bond.
Alloy commonly used as electrical soldering are 60/40 Sn/Pb which melts at 188
C and 63/37, Sn/Pb used principally in electrical/electronic work. This mixture is a
eutectic alloy. Which has the lowest melting point of 183 C of all the tin-lead alloy.
Silver soldering uses an alloy containing silver.
Brass alloy used in brazing.
2. clamps
3. welding materials
4. straplers
5. guns, glues
6. crimping tool
