Assumed knowledge

Are you enrolled in the right unit?

I The assumed knowledge for MATH1002 is HSC Mathematics

Extension 1 (or equivalent).
I Students with HSC Mathematics Extension 2 (or equivalent)
should consider taking the advanced version MATH1902.
MATH1002 Linear Algebra

Lectures/Tutorials

I Lectures: weeks 1 -13 (2 hours per week)

I Tutorials: weeks 1-12 (1 hour per week, starting from week 1)
I Check your timetable for exact time and place
I Check MATH1002 webpage for pre-tutorial sheet. You are
expected to bring it to the tutorial.

Important things - Assessment

I 65% exam, 20% online quizzes , 15% assignments (first

assignment 5%, second assignment is 10%).
I Better mark rule:
If students do better on their exam than the quizzes, then
their exam will count for 85%, and the quizzes won’t count at
all.
I Information can be found on MATH1002 webpage and
CANVAS
MATH1002 Linear Algebra

Important things - Online quizzes

I Start on Wednesday (from week 1) and close on the next

Tuesday at 11:59pm
I Best 10 out of 12 quizzes count;
I You get unlimited attempts and your maximum mark will
count.
I Contribute 20% of the total mark if better than exam’s mark
I Don’t miss out the online quizzes as it is much easier to get
high scores for them.

MATH1002 Linear Algebra

Course overview

I Linear Algebra is the study of vector spaces and linear

transformations between them.
Vector Space: Loosely speaking, it is a set of mathematical
objects which can be added together and scaled (multiplied by
a number).
Linear transformation: A special map that preserves
addition and scaling.
I Linear Algebra has many applications: engineering, physics,
economics, computer science, etc.

Preliminaries

Notation

I The set of all real numbers is denoted by R.

I Scalars (think as numbers) take real values and are denoted

by plain letters such as α, β, ....
I The symbol ∈ means ‘an element of’

1 ∈ R, −4 ∈ R, −5 7 ∈ R, 2 ∈ R, π ∈ R.
MATH1002 Linear Algebra
Preliminaries

Notation

I Suppose that P and Q are statements (i.e. sentences that can

be either true or false). We write
P =⇒ Q for “P implies Q”
P⇐=Q for “P if Q”
P ⇐⇒ Q for “P if and only if Q”, i.e. P and Q are
equivalent.
I Examples
• “I am an apple” =⇒ “I am a fruit”.
• x = 1 =⇒ x 2 = 1 but
• 6 x2 = 1
x = 1 ⇐=
• 2x + 3 = 5 ⇐⇒ x = 1
